Theft at the Circle of Life Garden

As our Facebook friends know, the Circle of Life Garden in Quincentennial park, Salthill, was developed in 2014 as the National Garden to commemorate organ donors and support their families and the wider organ donation community. Over the intervening years it has become a highly regarded sanctuary and popular amenity for Galway citizens and for the many thousands of visitors to the city annually.

Our Charity, Strange Boat Donor Foundation who created and manages the garden has always valued the respect and support shown by its many visitors which has proved so important in maintaining the garden to the highest standards.

However it is with regret that we now report the recent systematic theft of newly planted shrubs and plants, some of which were planted by members of the organ donation community in memory of loved ones. Apart from the expense in buying and replacing plants and shrubs, this theft is so disheartening and demoralising, particularly for the many local volunteers who give of their time each week to maintain the garden and who lovingly care for its many features.

While we have always believed in the innate goodwill of people, unfortunately, if this recent anti-social and shameful behaviour continues which is abhorred by the general public, further action will be necessary to ensure the Circle of Life Garden and the Quincentennial Park remain safe from those who disregard the law and violate this very special public space.

We ask our Facebook friends to share this post in the hope it might shame those involved into ceasing this despicable and illegal activity.
