Another very fulfilling weekend with members from a number of Galway Civil Defence Units coming together to complete People Handling Operator training course.

This course, led by in-house volunteer Instructors, ensures our volunteer members develop competence in the use of a number of people handling techniques and the proper use of equipment on board our unit ambulances.

Thank you to everyone involved and well done.

"Civil Defence is unique in the wide range of disciplines in which our volunteers train..."

Absolutely fantastic to see this significant inter-agency, multi-county exercise taking place. The collaboration and teamwork takes time to put in place but once its there, it can make all the difference.. Well done to everyone involved.

NOTICE OF EXERCISE - LOUGH CORRIB
Galway Civil Defence will host a planned Search & Rescue training exercise on Lough Corrib this Saturday, 3rd October 2026.
The exercise will involve Civil Defence personnel and rescue craft from a number of counties, along with supporting resources, working together to practise water search and rescue, communications, navigation and inter-unit coordination.
Members of the public may notice an increased presence of rescue boats, emergency vehicles, drones and personnel around Lough Corrib and the Cong area throughout the day.

The exercise provides an important opportunity for participating teams to train together, share skills and experience, and strengthen interoperability between neighbouring units.

We thank the public and other users of Lough Corrib for their co-operation and understanding.

🎶 Dont you know.. pump it up..
You've got to.. pump it up..🎶

Fail safes are built into alot of what we do..

Last evening, during ambulance orientation training, our members learned what to do if the electrics failed and how to raise, lower and stow the ramp.

Skills that are good to know and hopefully, never need.

A busy weekend had our wonderful volunteers active in a number of areas.
Unit Instructors were present in Civil Defence HQ for Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) Instructors Recertification course.. A great opportunity to meet peers, network, learn new ways of training delivery and review incoming updates for medical training.

Unit officers attended a workshop on Evacuation Management, establishing rest centres and dealing with displaced people on Saturday and then on Sunday, Unit members supported Galway Hospice in the Annual Memorial Walk in the Claddagh, Galway. This was a multi-unit support event and we send thanks to Loughrea Civil Defence colleagues for the help.

This coming weekend will see another multi-Unit training course being delivered internally by our volunteer Instructors, ensuring all members maintain mandatory qualifications to operate safely.

It was a welcome return to training tonight and a review of all Basic Life Support skills. The team practised CPR, Use of AEDs and familiarised themselves with the LUCAS automated Chest Compression device..

Did you know 70% of Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests occur at home..?? 🤔🤔.... Would you know what to do??
