A beautiful weekend kicked off Friday evening when one of our Unit Ambulance crews supported a community event, ensuring a safe night for over 600 local teenagers.

Saturday brought the team back together with colleagues from across Galway, to be recognised for their continued contribution to safety and community support.
Joined by Galway County Caithoirleach Cllr David Collins, Civil Defence HQs Niall Ui Mhurchu and Chief Fire Officer Gerry O'Malley, members received the Civil Defence 75yr Anniversary Medal 🏅, Some received promotions 🫡 and others received 10 and 20 year service medals respectively.
A great event was had and very well done to everyone involved.

A first occasion for County Galway to host the National Famine Commemoration and it is widely supported by Galway, Ballinasloe and Oranmore Units respectively.
Former President and proud Galway man Michael D Higgins was delighted to see the multi-unit team on site and even came for a photo. 🫡😁

We are getting lots of queries about how to join our Unit so here goes.. (This is relevant to joining all Galway Civil Defence Units)..

1️⃣You must be over 18 years of age
2️⃣Email Galway Civil Defence Officer [email protected] and express an interest
3️⃣You will need to complete Garda vetting for the voluntary role
4️⃣ You will need to complete HSE Ireland Children First online training program

Once complete you will be linked with your local Unit Officer (This is the Officer in Charge of your unit!)
- This Officer, or a designated member within the local Unit, will then guide you through Induction Training along with other mandatory training within your unit including:
-- PHECC Cardiac First Responder
-- Manual Handling

-You do not need any previous qualifications✅️
-You do not need a driving licence✅️

If you are interested in learning new skills, making new friends, practising skills you already have, enjoying new experiences.. then we may have a place for you 😁

Practise makes perfect.. a busy weekend and a huge team effort saw volunteer members from GalwayCity, Ballinasloe and Clonberne Units join us in Oranmore for a People Handling Re-Certification training course.

These groups sessions, led by our dedicated in-house instructors, allow strengthening of knowledge and practise, along with great discussion and ensures all members have the opportunity to maintain qualifications.
Well done to everyone 👏

An absolute pleasure to support the incredible heroes in Galway Hospice as one of our unit ambulance crews spent the morning bringing a resident to the beach...

Sending a massive congratulations to our friends and colleagues in the RNLI, Galway Lifeboat Station on achieving 30 years of service. 👏👏🫡

This day 30 years ago – at 9pm – Galway RNLI went on station.

Pat Lavelle was one of key people involved in establishing the lifeboat service in Galway and our first Lifeboat Operations Manager.. entirely fitting that he got to cut the cake to celebrate!
