Annaghdown GAA is delighted to announce the return of the Franciscan Cup school competition, which took place today in Cregg. All five schools in our parish were represented, with both boys’ and girls’ competitions providing a fantastic day of football.
There were some very close games, with every team showing great skill and determination in a series of highly competitive matches. Each team played one another in the group stages, followed by Cup, Shield and Plate finals.
In the boys’ Cup final, Annaghdown defeated Corrandulla by a single point in a very tight contest. In the boys’ Shield final, Bawnmore overcame Castlehacket, while in the Plate final, Corrandulla overcame Corrandrum.
In the girls’ Cup final, Corrandulla overcame a very good Corrandrum team. Corrandulla also claimed the Shield final with victory over Bawnmore, while Annaghdown girls overcame Castlehacket in the Plate final.
A huge thank you to referees Tom Browne, Charlie Ward and Ronan McNulty, who did a fantastic job officiating throughout the day.
Thanks also to all our coaches who helped and contributed to making the day run so smoothly. A special word of thanks to the secondary school students who assisted as umpires and linesmen — their help was greatly appreciated.
We also thank all the parents who dropped in food and refreshments to Cregg this morning; it was a great help and very much appreciated.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful schools in our parish for their continued support, hard work and commitment in helping to organise this tournament. Events like this simply would not happen without that partnership. A special word of thanks goes to the teachers, whose dedication, encouragement and generosity of spirit helped make the day such a success.
Finally, sincere thanks to our CE members, who had Cregg looking in great shape this morning, opened the clubhouse, and had everything in order to ensure a safe and secure event.
After a long absence, we are delighted to see the Franciscan Cup return, and we look forward to making it an annual event in both our club and our community calendar.
