We are participating in CanSat. What is CanSat? CanSat is a compaction for Secondary level students across the world who come together t
hey individually build a CanSat, Each satalight has to record temperature and atmosphere while its in orbit then transmit it by radio to a computer then it must safely land on the ground, using a parachute that must also be built by the team. A CanSat is a simulation of a real satellite, integrated within the volume and shape of a regular soft drink can. The challenge for the students is to fit all the major subsystems found in a satellite such as power and communications into a soda can of 350ml. After release from a rocket or a captive balloon the CanSat has to perform a certain mission and land safety on the ground. There is also an optional secondary mission witch you can take an option as to ad something extra to you project for example GPS, a camera, 3D lad reader, ect. Why would students do this? The idea of the program is to teach students a interest in Science and technology. It also improves there team building skills and there multi-media skills. Students will earn to program on a compute and to transfer into on a micro chip, to solder, electronics, design, mechanics, arco-dynamics and many more skills. This program encourages student into this being more interested in physics maths, technology and mechanics. A CanSat competition offers the opportunity to high-school and university students to have a first experience of a real space mission starting with design, through integration, testing, launching, data analysis and presentation of results. It is also a good platform for developing skills, both general (e.g. scientific enquiry, technical design, data analysis and presentation, teamwork) and practical (e.g. soldering, building electronics, software programming, testing). When and wear did it start? The first CanSat competition was held in 1999 in United States and since then many competitions have taken place around the world and during recent years in Europe. Several ESA Member States as the Netherlands, France, Spain and Norway have recently initiated CanSat competitions for high school and university students. Time Table:
March 2014: All teams- Western Regional final in GMIT
March 2014: Western Region winner will compete in the National Irish Final
April 2014: National Winner competes in the European CanSat Competition
