Every overdose is one too many.

At least 7 600 people died from overdose in the EU in 2024. But these deaths could have been prevented.

On International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember those who have lost their lives, acknowledge the people affected by overdose, and reaffirm the importance of compassionate and evidence-based approaches to preventing drug-related deaths.

Drug-induced deaths remain a major public health challenge across Europe, but all are preventable through measures such as timely interventions, access to treatment, naloxone and broader health and social support.

Harm Reduction Tips

• Start low, go slow. If you choose to use, take a very small amount first and wait at least 2 hours.
• Stay cool. Take breaks from dancing, and avoid overheating.
• Sip water regularly (but don’t overdo it — about 1 pint per hour is enough).
• Don’t mix substances. Combinations increase risks.
• Stick with friends and look out for each other.
• If something feels wrong, get help early. Medics at festivals are there to help without judgement. Give them a sample of what was taken if you can.
