Some interesting aspects of the recent budget announcement highlighted by the Environmental Pillar in the media this week.
It is disappointing although not surprising to see the lack of extra allocation given to nature restoration.

No extra funding for nature, carbon tax U-turn – the Government is clearly walking away from its climate, nature & energy security commitments in budget 2027

The budget doesn’t reflect the scale of any of these crises. Instead, it offers a series of reactive measures rather than a strategic plan or vision to cut our dependence on fossil fuels, protect our environment and restore nature. Great to see coverage of our reaction to Budget 2027

Volunteers Needed – Bredagh River Action Day!

Join Inishowen Rivers Trust for a community volunteer day along the beautiful Bredagh River in Moville!

Saturday 17th October 2026
Time: 11am – 2pm
Where: Meeting Point: J. Havlin Motors, Moville, F93 HW50

We'll be working together to help care for the Bredagh River and its surroundings. Activities will include:

Planting trees
Removing invasive Salmonberry
Litter picking
Repairs and clean-up work at the Bredagh River Bird Hide

No previous experience needed, everyone is welcome!

Come along, meet others in the community and help make a positive difference to our local environment.

Can you help us beat our sightings this year?

is officially underway, and we want to see if we can beat the number of squirrel and pine marten sightings submitted from January to June 2026.

Take a look at how your county is stacking up for each species – and help us build on these numbers.

We want to see more sightings from across Northern Ireland, with a particular focus on County Derry/L’Derry, where we’re keen to fill some important gaps in our knowledge.

Thank you to all the volunteers and the Inishowen Rivers Trust for helping us with our peatland restoration work in Donegal last weekend. ⚒️

Scrub such as gorse growing usually indicates the conditions are dry in that part of the peatland. When we cleared away some of the gorse we could more clearly see the internal drains impacting the peatlands ability to hold water. 💧

We were then able to install some larch timber dams to help raise the water table in this section of the peatland which will hopefully stop the scrub encroachment over time.

You can see in the third picture here the impact a small dam installed in May 2025 is already having. The wetter conditions are allowing sphagnum moss to grow up and over the dam already.

It was great to attend this year's National Ploughing Championships last week. A great opportunity to explore collaboration opportunities with other organisations and see some ploughing too (although you have to go looking for that bit)

It was also a chance to hear from Minister Timmy Dooley and Senator Paul Daly on the need for improved traceability on agriculture and fisheries products. This is particularly necessary for the fisheries sector.

It was also a chance to try out the lack of cycle infrastructure for the ploughing, described in RTÉ One 's Oliver Callan show introduction to this years ploughing championships.
Thankfully some nature based solutions stepped in to provide an ash tree to lock the bike to for the day.
It seems Screggan was maybe outside the Tullamore decarbonising I learnt about cycling back into the train.
