Our first course of 2026 is now open for booking and it’s one of our most popular programmes.

The Small Streams Characterisation System (SSCS) is a hands-on, citizen science course that gives you the skills to understand, monitor and protect the waterways in your area.

Over two days, you’ll learn how to:
✔ Identify plants and wildlife that indicate stream health
✔ Assess river habitats and physical structure
✔ Understand threats like pollution and invasive species
✔ Carry out real stream surveys in the field

Small streams make up the majority of our river systems and play a vital role in our environment, yet they are often overlooked and under-protected
