The NPWS Team would like to thank everyone who visited us at the Global Green Zone during Electric Picnic!

It was a valuable opportunity to engage with all those lovely festival-goers as well as with other environmental groups like Atlantic West Natura Communities, the Irish Environmental Network and members groups like the Irish Wildlife Trust, Bat Conservation Ireland and the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group.

Our outreach this year focused on two key areas: Protection of ground-nesting birds and Wildfire prevention.

Heritage Week 2026 started last Saturday!
This year's theme, Heritage at Risk, reminds us just how precious our environment is. These photos of native damselflies, sundews, and orchids are a beautiful reminder of the hidden wonders we are working together to protect.
Weeks like this bring us together to safeguard our future. We have great events running all week—don't miss out!

Warning Effective From 16:00hrs 29/07/2026
Effective Period Expires 12:00hrs 04/08/2026

Conditions are exceptionally dry and warm, meaning a single spark can easily ignite a catastrophic disaster.

We are urgently appealing to the public to protect our nature: do not light fire rings or campfires anywhere in our parks and strictly avoid all fire risks. Be extremely careful of ci******es or other naked flames.

Please share this message and act responsibly to protect our wildlife and rangers.
Report hill fires immediately. To report a fire, please call the National Park Duty Ranger on 087 980 3899.

A bright spot amidst the smoke🧡🦋

While our crews have been working hard tackling the recent wildfires, nature gave us a beautiful reminder of what we are protecting.

Here is a recent picture of a rare summer visitor out in a sand dunes habitat! This incredible insect doesn't live here full-time—it actually migrates all the way from Southern Europe and North Africa to Ireland.

Can anyone guess the name of this rare species?

The NPWS team is currently battling two active wildfires, in Killarney National Park and in the Wicklow Mountains. Despite these ongoing fires and an Orange Forest Fire Warning active until July 24th, we are unfortunately still encountering people camping and lighting prohibited ring fires in our protected sites.

Conditions are exceptionally dry and warm, meaning a single spark can easily ignite a catastrophic disaster.

We are urgently appealing to the public to protect our nature: do not light ring fires or campfires anywhere in our parks and strictly avoid all fire risks. Be extremely careful of ci******es or other naked flames.

Please share this message and act responsibly to protect our wildlife and rangers.

Moths are nocturnal, elusive, mysterious - and come in an amazing array of colours, shapes and patterns!

Join our NPWS Wicklow Education guide for a talk on these fascinating creatures at 7pm on Thursday 23rd of July in Roundwood Parish Hall.

A practical demonstration of setting up a moth trap will follow the talk with an early morning examination of the contents of trap planned for the following morning, Friday 24th of July.

This free event is organised in association with the Roundwood Tidy Towns Biodiversity Group (Roundwood.ie) and the National Parks & Wildlife Service.

What a fantastic weekend at Kaleidoscope Festival!

Our Education Team had the absolute pleasure of connecting with many passionate families and kids eager to discover the wonders of nature.

Here is a quick recap of how our young nature heroes took action:

Tackled environmental challenges through our immersive educational games.

Met our resident otter, a spectacular first-time sight for many children!

Discovered ground-nesting birds and learned how vulnerable their habitats are today.

A massive thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand to learn, play and support our mission.
