The European Commission has published new guidance on implementing the Birds Directive — clarifying protection rules and simplifying procedures for farmers, foresters and infrastructure developers.

The guidance arrives against recent data showing that between 1990 and 2023, common bird populations across the EU fell by 15%. For farmland birds, the decline reaches 42% — driven primarily by agricultural intensification, pesticide use and habitat loss.

It's Wild Salmon Day today!

☘️A day that should be about celebrating a species rooted in our history, our culture and who we are as people.

📢Unfortunately, wild salmon in Ireland are on the brink!

🚨There has been a 90% decline in wild salmon numbers in Irish rivers since the 1970s with fewer than 150,000 left today.

Causes of decline:
- Destruction of river habitats.
- River barriers such as weirs and dams blocking salmon from moving up the river.
- Fish farms spreading disease and sea lice to wild populations.
- Water pollution.
- Climate change.

✊With the right political will these issues can be solved through removing barriers, and keeping our waters free from pollution.

Very pertinent, wonder what Irelands heat- health action plan is like in terms of preparedness HSE Ireland Cork Healthy Cities

Nine out of ten deaths from extreme weather events in Europe are caused by heat — and this week, in late May, a heatwave is already breaking records across the continent. 🌡️

Temperatures are running 10–15°C above seasonal norms across Western Europe. France has broken its May temperature record; the UK recorded its hottest May day in nearly 80 years; Portugal has reached 40°C. Europe's heatwave season has arrived two months early.

⚠️ EEA data show that between 1980 and 2023, heatwaves accounted for 95% of all fatalities linked to weather and climate-related extremes — over 200,000 deaths. In 2022 alone, an estimated 70,000 people died from heat. Older people, women, and those with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions face the greatest risk.

Not all EEA member countries have heat-health action plans in place. That gap needs to close.
