🌱 We've made the shortlist for Ireland's Greenest Places 2026!
Enniscorthy Community Allotments has been named one of four finalists in the Greenest Community category, up against Treasure the Tolka in Dublin, Siopa Glás in Ballon, Co Carlow, and The Circular Square in Clonmel, Co Tipperary.
Now in its second year, the competition is run by The Irish Times in association with Electric Ireland , judging entries on environmental impact, community engagement and real behavioural change.
Established in 2021, our 1.5 acre site at Gort Na Gréine is used by around 250 people every day, with around 15 community organisations attending and 20 international families part of our community.
As our Chairman, Michael Devereux, puts it: "Environmental sustainability is central to the project. The allotments provide valuable habitats for wildlife and pollinators, including bees and butterflies, enhancing local biodiversity." Composting, rainwater conservation and chemical-free growing all play their part too.
It's a hub for horticultural education as much as growing: workshops, talks and horticultural therapy sessions, a geodesic dome for mindfulness and wellbeing, a sensory walk, our Little Buds programme for children, and partnerships with groups like Wexford Mental Health Service and Enniscorthy Youth Centre.
"It provides a shared green space where people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can grow vegetables, connect with nature, learn sustainable gardening skills, and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the outdoors," Michael says.
None of this happens without our volunteers and members. Category winners and the overall title are announced the weekend of 2 and 3 October.
