Small Things Like These, an unforgettable story of hope and heroism, is brought to the stage with actor Andrew Bennett (Seán in the Oscar-nominated The Quiet Girl/ An Cailin Ciúin) accompanied by new music from the legendary Eleanor McEoy (A Woman’s Heart).

Claire Keegan’s Booker Prize-nominated novel (“Resonant and deeply moving”, Hilary Mantel) is set in Co. Wexford town in the 1980s in the run up to Christmas: as coal merchant Bill Furlong does his rounds, he discovers a girl locked away in terrible conditions in the local convent.

Unlike the silent majority, he decides to do something about it.
This staged reading of Small Things Like These is performed by Andrew Bennett. One of the finest actors of his generation, Andrew has completed a new series for Sky Originals, Small Town Big Story, and Blackshore for the BBC.

Eleanor McEvoy will perform her original music composed for Small Things Like These. Eleanor’s critically acclaimed canon of work spans sixteen albums with numerous cover versions of her songs by Emmylou Harris, Mary Black, Phil Coulter, Eliza Carthy, Jack L, and Saint Sister.

Presented by Four Rivers , Small Things Like These is directed by former Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre, Ben Barnes. Recent directing credits include The Last Stand (Four Rivers), Madama Butterfly (INO), Lights Out (Four Rivers) and in 2024 he will direct Castel Gandolfo, his sixth collaboration with the writer, Jim Nolan.

This is a large production and casting will include actors, musicans and singers.

Several roles for individuals (various ages/gender) to play roles as house residents, IRA fighters, British military etc also included.

✨ EXCITING NEWS✨
Celebrating the centenary of his birth, Enniscorthy Drama Group is excited to announce our next production, 'The Hostage' by the great Irish author, Brendan Behan.
The Hostage, which is considered to be Behan's masterwork, is a tragi-comedy set in late 1950s Dublin in a lodging house-cum-house of ill repute. It is here a young English soldier is held hostage by The Irish Republican Army in a bid for the release of one of their own men who is facing ex*****on in Belfast. His time here proves eventful as he encounters an array of peculiar, off beat and somewhat unorthodox characters who have made this odd house their home.
Not just a story of the tyranny of Irish history and warfare, this play explores religion, politics and social conditions. Tragedy is offset with an abundance of comedy & quick wit, satire & parody, debate & at times, borderline fantasy, all with a wonderful and extensive musical score to boot with songs penned by Brendan Behan and also impromptu dancing! A play that has something for everyone!!
EDG is delighted to be staging this three act play later this winter. This is a large production and will mark our 10 years of performing plays as EDG. The cast size is large with a vast age range to suit many. Auditions will be held in the coming weeks with further details to follow shortly. To register your interest or if you have any queries, please email us at [email protected] or send a message to our Facebook or Instagram accounts.
We look forward to the next few months ahead!!
