Hands Off Ennis Post Office Field

Hands Off Ennis Post Office Field The battle to protect Ennis Post Office Field has been resurrected.

Once again, plans are afoot to disrupt and 'develop' the last remaining green space in Ennis Town Centre, which also happens to be a flood plain of the River Fergus.

🚨🚨Breaking News🚨🚨

We are understandably delighted that the Ennis Post Office Field is OFF THE TABLE!

People power works again, so we would like to thank everyone who contributed in some way, especially our supporters.

We should all enjoy this victory and when the dust settles (not hard with all the rain...), we look forward to the Council developing an appropriate management plan for the LAST meadow in Ennis Town centre, the "lung" of the town.

Finally, the campaigns to save the Post Office Field started a long time ago and we want to give special mention to three campaigners who did not get to see this outcome - Cornelia Wahli, Bernie Loftus and Dermot Hayes ✊️

Happy !

🌱 Wetlands cover only 6% of the worlds' land surface, yet 40% of all plants and animals depend on them.

They are biodiversity hotspots, and they act as powerful carbon sinks helping to fight climate change.

⚠️ But they're also the ecosystems with the highest rates of decline, loss, and degradation.

That’s why the EU Habitat Directive protects 28 wetland habitat types, such as peatlands and wet forests, listing them as priority habitats for restoration actions.

The EU Nature Restoration Regulation focuses on restoring wetlands by:

🦆 increasing biodiversity
💧 securing the things nature does for free, like cleaning our water and air and protecting us from floods
🌡️ limiting global warming to 1.5°C
🌽 preventing natural disasters and reducing risks to food security

🆕 With the LIFE programme's biggest project so far – LIFE HumedalES – the EU will restore more than 26,000 hectares of wetlands across Spain.

Great to see an otter in the town, habitats need to be preserved and protected, and we all benefit from it

A lot of rain promised today. Please, IF IT'S SAFE, send us in your pictures of the flooded field

We at the Hands off Ennis Post Office Field campaign were saddened to hear of the passing of Dermot Hayes. Dermot was a committed supporter of our campaign and contributed to our documentary over the summer of 2025.

We wish to express our condolences to Dermots family, friends and all who knew him. Dermot had a particular fondness for the heron that can be seen on the field.

Dermots contribution to our documentary can be seen at the 1 minute, 20 second mark below.

Unfortunately, illegal dumping is a blight everywhere, particularly in unsupervised urban locations. Will the proposed boardwalk through the Post Office Field be another dumping ground?

Some more images of the flooding, right up to the wall. To build anything on this field will mean water is displaced somewhere.

People sometimes ask why we are against the construction of a boardwalk on the Post Office Field. One of our answers is "Because it's a flood plain"
