Well done to all those that came along this evening. A lot of weeds cleared along the road from hall to church and hall front. A start made on the sensory and fairy area. Fantastic community spirit. A lot of work also going on in GAA field, painting, planting. It's looking great our fantastic parish. Grass cut today too. Apologies I should have taken more photos but will post some tomorrow of the fab flowers 🌺

Parish Pumps in Effin.

Irish parish pumps were 19th-century cast-iron water sources that became central community hubs for rural life, acting as social gathering spots, news centers, and vital infrastructure. Today, many are preserved as heritage items or renovated as garden features, having historically represented the root of local, community-focused "parish-pump politics"
There are a number of these old pumps in Effin. And there is a plan to identify them all and possibly restore them in some way.
There is one at Effin Church, Davys Cross, Legane Cross, Garrankeagh Cross (Bobby Burkes), Garriencoona Cross, (Near Mike Kellys), Brickfield. Are they any more around the parish of Effin that we may have forgotten about or are overgrown etc.?
Please help us find them. They were important places in the parish years ago.
Historical Significance
Public Health: Following the 1870s Public Health Acts, local councils installed these pumps to provide clean water, replacing polluted wells and rivers.
Social Hub: The pump was often the only source of water in a village, making it a natural gathering spot for community news, social interaction, and gossip.
