The Shannon class at Dunmore East RNLI is an all-weather lifeboat, designed to operate in the worst of sea conditions. The lifeboat is self-righting, so will automatically turn the right way up in the event of capsize. With a top speed of 25 knots and a range of 250 nautical miles, this lifeboat is ideal for offshore searches and rescues in calm or rough seas. The power of the Shannon means it can

tow large vessels out of danger - and waterjet technology allows it to manoeuvre in shallow waters or be intentionally beached in an emergency. Class: Shannon

SERVICE CALL - Dunmore East RNLI comes to aid of two people aboard disabled motor cruiser.

The volunteer crew of Dunmore East RNLI launched their all-weather lifeboat, William and Agnes Wray, last Sunday evening (25 May) following reports of an 8-metre motor cruiser experiencing engine difficulties approximately three nautical miles south-east of Hook Head.

The crew's pagers sounded at 17:41 and the lifeboat launched to assist the vessel, which had two people onboard and was at anchor while awaiting assistance.

Dunmore East RNLI arrived on scene at 18:13 and assessed the situation. As the vessel was unable to continue its journey safely under its own power, and in the interests of the safety of those onboard, the decision was made to establish a tow. The volunteer crew then brought the vessel safely back to Dunmore East Harbour.

The lifeboat returned to station at 19:35, where the crew refuelled and prepared the lifeboat for its next service.

Speaking following the call out, Deirdre Lane, Dunmore East RNLI Volunteer Launch Authority, said:

'The skipper did the right thing by seeking assistance and anchoring the vessel once the engine problem became apparent. Seeking help early and taking sensible precautions can prevent a situation from becoming more serious. We were pleased to assist and bring the vessel and its occupants safely back to shore.'

The RNLI is reminding all boat users to ensure their vessels are properly maintained before heading to sea and to carry suitable means of communication. Before setting out, check your engine, fuel supply, battery systems and safety equipment. If you get into difficulty on the water, or see someone else in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and RNLI issue water safety advice ahead of June Bank Holid

Ahead of the June Bank Holiday weekend, the Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI are urging the public to stay safe if planning an activity on or near the water.

While air temperatures are warmer, sea and inland water temperatures remain low. This contrast can present a hidden but serious risk of cold water shock and hypothermia to anyone entering or unexpectedly falling into the water.

Even on warm, sunny days, water temperatures are often below 15Β°C, cold enough to trigger cold water shock. This sudden reaction can cause involuntary gasping, panic, and loss of breathing control, greatly increasing the risk of drowning.

While a large number of people are expected to visit the coast or inland waterways over the bank holiday weekend, for many this will be their first dip of the season. Remember to enter the water slowly, splash yourself to acclimatise, keep your dips short and stay within your depth. Don’t go alone, swim with others, always stay together, and ensure everyone leaves the water safely.

If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast or think that they are in trouble, use marine VHF radio Ch 16 or dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
