On Friday we finished Men's Health Week in the Déise Day Centre with a good dose of Physical exercise (Dancing) and Mental exercise (singing) 💙💛with one of our favourite singing men, Philip English. Philip has been coming to sing in the Centre for over 2 years now and he has grown great friendships with all the members and staff. He is definitely one of the family now and stuck with us.💙💛 Jean (volunteer from Carriglea) even got a duet with him, whilst Walter and Jim gave us some tunes so Philip had a bit of a break. 🤣 The roof was lifted for the afternoon and the members went home wrecked 😂, The men in the Centre were gifted with a hamper each of healthy goodies for snacks for the weekend, (even sent one home with the singing man himself) with items donated by another favourite man of ours, Conor from the Country Store. 💛💙 Whilst Men's Health week is ending today(Sunday) we do try and promote healthy living at all times in the Centre and a renewed reminder that if you notice any changes please contact your doctor and always go for your regular check ups and blood tests. We are so blessed with the men in our Day Centre community and love them all dearly. 💛💙

All Roads Lead to Dublin for Carriglea! 🏅

There’s great excitement around Carriglea this week as 50 of their athletes and staff get ready to travel to Dublin on Thursday, June 18th for the Special Olympics Ireland National Games!

This fantastic four-day event will bring together athletes from all over the country to compete, connect, and celebrate everything that makes sport so special.

The team will be taking part in a wide range of sports including swimming, bowling, athletics, basketball, soccer, and motor activities — all after months of training, teamwork, and dedication.

The National Games are about so much more than competition. They’re about friendships, confidence, inclusion, and enjoying every moment — and we know the athletes will do Carriglea proud in every way.

We’re wishing the entire team a safe trip, the very best of luck, and an unforgettable experience. No matter the results, you are all already winners in our eyes. Always part of the Déise Day Centre family💙💛

This morning as part of "Men's Health Week", some of the men of the Déise Day Centre were taken down to Lawlors Hotel Dungarvan for a lovely slap up breakfast. The pictures below speak for themselves. 🍴☕️ We got fed and watered and minded by the wonderful staff and then had a great group discussion about men's health. We talked about how men need to mind their health with regular check ups, exercise, noticing changes in body, lumps, heart health etc. The men went home with printed information from the primary men's health manual distributed by the HSE "Action Man - Ten Top Tips for Men's Health." and information on prostate cancer. We would always encourage if you are ever worried about anything contact your doctor immediately. Only your doctor or nurse can give you medical advice. We would also encourage a day in the Deise Day Centre as being very good for your health. 🤣💙💛

International Men's Health Week (MHW) always begins on the Monday before Father's Day and ends on Father's Day itself. During 2026, it will run from Monday 15th until Sunday 21st June.

The overall aims of the week are to:

- Heighten awareness of preventable health problems for males of all ages.
- Support men and boys to engage in healthier lifestyle choices / activities.
- Encourage the early detection and treatment of health difficulties in males.
But why is there a need to hold a Men's Health Week? ... Males constitute almost 50% of the population on the island of Ireland and, therefore, deserve to have a gender lens focused upon their specific health needs. Research clearly shows that these men experience a disproportionate burden of ill-health and die too young ...

- Local men die younger than women do.
- Males have higher death rates than females for almost all of the leading causes of death and at all ages.
- Men’s poorer lifestyles are responsible for a high proportion of chronic diseases.
- Late presentation to health services can lead to a large number of problems becoming untreatable ...
Indeed, while many of these conditions are preventable, their prevalence amongst men may, in fact, rise in the future.

Each year, there is also a specific theme for MHW. During 2026, the theme for the island of Ireland will be 'One Step at a Time' and everyone is asked to make progress - not seek perfection!

The celebration of Men's Health Week on the island of Ireland during 2026 is funded by the Health Service Executive Health and Wellbeing and the Public Health Agency.

When a member of the family tree is missing and should be celebrating, we do everything we can to show them how much they mean to us. 💙💛 Today some of the members and the staff in the Déise Day Centre went down to Whitfield, where they, with the help of the wonderful staff there, threw Alfie a surprise party to celebrate his 70th Birthday. Equipped with Tess (his precious sister), presents, a wonderful cake made by Eleanor, Jim and his music box and a bus load of friends, we can honestly say for a moment Alfie was actually speechless. Alfie we wish you a speedy recovery and can't wait until you are back with us, we love you dearly, Rest up and we can't wait to see what adventures this next year will bring. Happy Birthday again. 🎉🎂💙💛
