Hope Through Care: Saving a Young Life in Luak D**g

When five-year-old Nyabal suffered a severe epileptic seizure in Luak D**g refugee camp, her family believed she had died and began preparing for her burial. Displaced from South Sudan and cut off from consistent healthcare, her condition had gone untreated for years until a GOAL community outreach team knocked on their door.

With support from the Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund (EHF), GOAL connected Nyabal to medical care and psychosocial support that changed her life. Today, she plays and laughs alongside other children in the camp.

In Zimbabwe's Gutu District, recurring droughts and erratic rainfall have made access to safe water increasingly difficult.

For many families, especially women and girls, collecting water meant walking long distances every day, often relying on unsafe sources.

With funding from the United States Government and in collaboration with the Government of Zimbabwe, GOAL and LEAD completed the Jori Piped Water Scheme in March 2026. The project replaces scattered and unreliable water points with a pressurised piped network that delivers safe water through strategically located tap stands closer to households.

Key results:
• 20,000+ people with improved access to safe water
• 10 villages benefiting from the scheme
• 4,500 households reached

Speaking at the completion and handover ceremony, Assistant Director Josephine Francesco of the U.S Embassy highlighted that the scheme contributes to the wider U.S Government commitment to strengthening rural water resilience across Zimbabwe. Since 2020, more than 1,000 boreholes have been drilled across the country, improving clean water access for over 200,000 rural residents.

In the drylands of Niger, farming families face immense challenges as climate shocks and food insecurity impact their daily lives. With the support of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) through UNITLIFE, alongside co-financing from Irish Aid, GOAL is delivering solutions to communities who need them most.

Together, we are rehabilitating land, introducing climate-smart and nutrient-rich crops, and improving storage to reduce losses and protect harvests.

With the support of MBRGI, GOAL is helping communities strengthen their resilience, improve nutrition, and create lasting opportunities for a better future.

🗣️ "These are two causes that are close to our heart. GOAL do remarkable work with communities facing crisis around the world, while Cancer Fund for Children provide incredible support for families affected by cancer here in Ireland" - Robbie McCarthy

⛰️ On behalf of everyone at GOAL and Cancer Fund for Children, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the McCarthy family and all those who took part in the 2026 Tochar Phádraig Fundraising Walk on Saturday.

👣 40 participants, ranging in age from 11 to 70, braved the wind and rain to complete the challenging 34km route across bog, fields, and roads.

👏 Walkers experienced all four seasons in one day, but spirits remained high throughout! To date, organisers and participants have raised an impressive €8,000 in support of GOAL’s lifesaving humanitarian work and for young people and families impacted by cancer across the island of Ireland.

After years of conflict and displacement, families returning to Heish in Syria face a difficult reality - damaged homes, limited services, and the challenge of starting again.

Thankfully, with support from the European Union, GOAL teams are providing cash assistance, restoring water systems, and rehabilitating homes to help families rebuild their lives.

“Our main objective is to help displaced families return to their homes with dignity,” says GOAL's WASH Mechanical Engineer, Ali Al-Jasem. “We do this by ensuring that clean drinking water reaches households again.”

For many families, rebuilding goes beyond physical repairs. “We are not just rehabilitating shelters,” says Marwan Al-Bakour, GOAL's Rehabilitation Engineer. “We are supporting families who have lost their sense of safety and stability, helping them rebuild a living environment that offers protection, privacy, and dignity.”
