Motion passed! DLR county council endorses plan for maintenance with fixes to start this year!

Our members, including union members who are Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council tenants in Sallynoggin, were at the council this evening ahead of a vote on a motion in support of our campaign demands brought forward by Cllr Melisa Halpin.

The motion was passed and it was agreed to compile a priority list of houses in need of maintenance and that work should begin later this year.

We're happy with this step forward in our campaign and for working class tenants in Sallynoggin. It shows the power of collective action and of our union!

We'll be continuing to organize on the issue of public housing conditions and to ensure any commitments the council makes are followed up! ✊

This Monday! Show the council they can't ignore the suffering their rent hikes are imposing on tenants!

On Friday, 22 May at 12:30, CATU members will join a demonstration in front of the Greek Embassy on Pembroke St. in Dublin 2 in solidarity with the residents of the Community of Squatted Prosfigyka who are resisting destruction at the hands of the Greek state.

Prosfigyka, ran in radical self-organisation, is home to 400 people, and one of the biggest reclaimed spaces in Europe, including a daycare centre, communal pharmacy, bakery, and autonomous women's structure.

The Greek state is now threatening to seize and gentrify Prosfygika. In chorus with acts of resistance around the world CATU will rise to support; come out on Friday with your union to demonstrate our solidarity!

Resistance is our common language! Save Prosfigyka!

Homes Not Hazards: Pamphlet launch and international housing movements panel discussion.

This exciting event will include a panel discussion on the development of the housing movement internationally, with great speakers including:

👉 Rose Lenehan, an organizer with the Los Angeles Tenants Union, Koreatown Local. LATU is a volunteer-run, bilingual (Spanish-English) union with 15 local chapters.
👉 Nikos Vrantsis is a member of HARTA and an organizer with the Thessaloniki Tenants’ Union, focusing on grassroots housing struggles in small municipalities and urban contexts in Greece.
👉 Lisa Vollmer is a housing researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space and a housing activist with “Deutsche Wohnen & Co enteignen”, a campaign in Berlin so expropriate the housing stock of big, financialized housing companies and bring them under democratic control.
👉 Helen Moynihan, Dublin regional organiser for the Community Action Tenants Union!

The event will also be the launch of a new publication/booklet about conditions in public housing in Dublin, called 'Homes Not Hazards', based on photos and quotes provided by residents of two DCC flat complexes, Cromcastle Court and Emmet Buildings, about the conditions and maintenance problems in their homes and estates.

The event is being organised as a collaboration between CATU and the Just Housing research project. It will take place in Connolly Books in Dublin on Thursday May 21st at 7pm.
