A New Approach to Our Waiting List for Equine Assisted Activities

We are delighted to announce an important change to how we manage our waiting list for equine assisted activities. From September 2026, we will be moving from a first-come, first-served waiting list to a needs-based waiting list.

This change has come at an important time for our organisation. Over the past number of months, we have also been working behind the scenes with the Pobal Achieve Together Programme to review how we manage our waiting lists. We have also recently been awarded funding through the Re-think Ireland Disability Participation and Awareness Fund, which will allow us to deliver a 12-month Equine Assisted Activity Programme for people with disabilities in our community. The goal has been simple: to reduce waiting times and make sure our equine assisted activities programmes are accessible to the people who need them most.

What does this mean for people already on our waiting list?
Everyone who was on our therapeutic riding waiting list up to the end of August 2026 has been contacted and asked to complete a triage assessment form. The assessment helps us to understand each person's circumstances, their needs and what they may gain from taking part in equine assisted activities. This information will allow us to prioritise available programme places based on need, rather than simply on how long someone has been waiting.

We understand that any change to a waiting list can raise questions, particularly for people who have been waiting for some time. We want to reassure everyone that this change has been made with one goal in mind — to make access to our programmes fairer and to ensure that our limited places go to those who can benefit from them most. The new needs-based waiting list will apply from September 2026.
