The Hugh Lane Gallery print workshop in RADE

Over the past few weeks, participants have been developing their ideas through a combination of drawing, experimentation, and hands‑on printmaking. They began by sketching their concepts on paper, exploring composition and imagery, before transferring their designs onto Lino blocks.

As they worked, participants learned to use Lino cutting tools for expressive mark making, discovering how different blades create texture, depth, and movement that bring their imagery to life.

Throughout this process, they have been building a strong foundation in key printmaking skills, from design development and tool handling to colour exploration, printing on paper and tote bags, and confidently using the printing press.

RADE drawing workshop

Using charcoal as a medium, the participants in the workshop explores drawing as both a physical and inner experience. Through automatic drawing and body scan practices, the participants tune into sensation, breath, and intuition to create mark making and textures without though.

We then move into drawing from a life model, using charcoal to investigate shape, volume, space, texture, and line. Participants experiment with expressive mark‑making, smudging, erasure, and tonal layering to discover how charcoal can capture both the structure of the body and the energy behind the gesture.

For the last number weeks, the RADE participants have been diving deep into the world of abstraction through movement, sounds, materials, spaces and drawings with Juana, Ollie and Sinead.

Analog film RADE
The workshop is for the participants to exploring with 16mm film stirp on how to develop the film strip through a chemical‑free film technique using plants and sunlight
Analog film workshop is an eco‑friendly analog film process that creates images directly on 16mm positive film using nothing more than plants, moisture, and sunlight. This method bypasses film cameras and conventional photographic chemicals, letting nature itself imprint onto the film.
The process is a hands‑on, experimental process, and collaboration between film emulsion, plant chemistry, and the energy of the sun.
Cameras were not used in this process of making this work, just curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to get the hands messy and learn about the process. The participants hand crafted their own unique film strip.

Explore the art of handmade cinema.
Hands‑On 16mm Film Workshop

In this immersive workshop, participants dive into the world of direct animation, a playful, hands‑on approach to filmmaking where the film strip itself becomes the canvas by using 16mm film strip to experiment with.

Painting directly onto 16mm film strip with blank and found partial images to create bursts of colours and textures.
Scratching, etching, and distressing the emulsion to sculpt light and rhythm into the film strip. Collaging and manipulating found footage to transform from what is already there into something entirely new.
Layering inks, markers, tape, and unconventional materials to push the boundaries of analogue image‑making.

Apart of this process the participants splice and join film strip together to produce a three and half minute abstract film piece.
Cameras were not used in this process of making this work, just curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to get the hands messy and learn about the process. The participants hand crafted their own unique film strip and projected at the end of the workshop.

Hugh Lane Gallery workshops in RADE.

Mono printing ancient Roman/Greek vases.

This workshop is part of an ongoing series of creative sessions facilitated by Anca and Roxy from the Hugh Lane Gallery.

The final workshop with the Hugh Lane Gallery introduced participants to the basics of mono printing, using ancient Roman and Greek vases as the central theme. This historical imagery provided a strong visual starting point for exploring the technique and understanding how simple forms can inspire expressive printmaking.
During the session, the facilitators demonstrated the full mono printing process, showing how to work with the materials, apply ink, and transfer mark making onto paper. Their guidance highlighted how ink, pressure, and surface interact, helping participants see how each stage contributes to the final image.

Participants then experimented with colour, shape, and volume, exploring the expressive possibilities of the medium. They were encouraged to observe closely, take creative risks, and discover how the interaction between ink and paper can create atmosphere, texture, and personal expression.
