🌿 Mongan Bog, Co. Offaly 🌿

Did you know Mongan Bog is one of the best-preserved raised bogs in Western Europe and among the last intact midland raised bogs in Ireland, and is protected by An Taisce?

At over 9,000 years old, this remarkable landscape supports rare wildlife, unique plant species, and vital peat-forming habitats that help store carbon and protect biodiversity. Home to Curlew, Hen Harrier, Irish Hare, and insect-eating plants like sundews, Mongan Bog is one of Ireland’s oldest surviving ecosystems.

🌿 Hidden Nature in the Heart of Dublin 🌿

Did you know that one of Dublin’s most important urban wildlife sanctuaries is tucked away on Morehampton Road in Donnybrook?

Known locally as The Grove, this unique green space spans over 1,800m² and is one of the few remaining woodland habitats within Dublin City. Home to bats, sparrowhawks, frogs, foxes, and countless other species, it provides a vital refuge for wildlife in an urban environment.

Originally donated with the condition that it remain a sanctuary for birds and a green amenity for Dublin’s residents, The Grove has never been developed and continues to serve as a living example of conservation in action.

🌱 A Biodiversity Action Plan was developed in 2025, and new funding secured in 2026 through Community Foundation Ireland and the National Parks and Wildlife Service is helping to bring its recommendations to life.

The vision for The Grove is simple but powerful: a safe haven for wildlife and a place where people of all ages can connect with and learn about nature.

💚 Protecting nature doesn’t always happen in remote landscapes—sometimes it happens in the middle of our cities.
