Reflecting on some of our highlights this year, we are particularly proud of our fundraising for important causes such as Breast Cancer Ireland. We also had our fab Spring Fair market supporting local businesses. We had our annual Biology Subject Talk, Career Panel Discussion and Eve McCarthy Award to wrap up the year 🫶

Thank you to the amazing work of the BioSoc 2025/26 committee.

Congratulations to the new committee for 2026/27!👇

We were honoured to present the 2026 Eve McCarthy Award for “inspiring aspiring scientists” to Professor Ed Wild, and in honour of our friend, Eve McCarthy.

This award recognises the revolutionary work of scientists that is deeply influential in inspiring the next generation. Formerly known as the George Sigerson Award, it was renamed in January 2025 in memory of our dear friend and committee member, Eve McCarthy, who embodied kindness, curiosity, selflessness and a passion for making science more welcoming and human.

Professors Tabrizi and Wild led the UCL team involved in a groundbreaking gene therapy trial demonstrating that AMT-130 may slow the progression of Huntington’s disease by approximately 75% over three years compared with untreated cases ; representing a major breakthrough for a condition that previously had no disease-modifying treatment. They received the Eve McCarthy Award for their exceptional dedication to inspiring aspiring scientists - a mission that resonates deeply with Eve’s own legacy.

Thank you to the BioSoc Committee 2025/26 for all their hard work to make this event happen❤️
