The IUCN Contributions for Nature platform is a great mapping tool looking to gather data and track conservation and restoration actions worldwide.

Its first phase focuses on documentation of potential contributions to the Programme Areas on Land and Climate and the long-term vision spans the entire of the Nature 2030 IUCN Programme.

Where is conservation happening? How does it contribute to global goals? What impact is it having on species?

The IUCN Contributions for Nature platform helps answer these questions by mapping conservation and restoration actions worldwide.

With 10,000+ contributions already logged, every new entry strengthens our understanding of conservation impact. 🌿🌍

The rise of 'carspreading' — bigger cars are costing Irish motorists parking spaces and threatening lives, study finds

Damien Ó Tuama, National Cycling Co-ordinator at An Taisce said that Ireland’s residential and urban streets are “turning more into giant car parks, as cars grow longer, wider and higher”.

“There is less and less space for those on foot or on bikes. This has to change, particularly as more children grow up in cities compared to years ago. Cars and spaces for cars need to shrink, not grow, if we are to have safe and convivial neighbourhoods.”

The Irish Cycling Campaign

Research shows 14% of on-street car parking spaces will be erased by ever bigger cars

We were thrilled to be at the very first Farming for Nature Festival! Huge congratulations to the organisers on creating this excellent event and all the work they do!

We had so many wonderful conversations learning from the experiences from a wide variety of Irish farmers, connected with great organisations such as Historic Houses of Ireland, The Irish Wildlife Trust, and the Breeding Waders EIP Project who are doing brilliant conservation work for these vulnerable ground-nesting birds — including on one of An Taisce's properties held-in-trust, Mongan Bog, County Offaly.

It was also a highlight to meet the incredible Darina Allen (pictured with our Membership Manager Annette McCaul). She was a speaker at the event and she has done so much to promote and amplify the vital importance of supporting high-quality Irish producers and the phenomenal benefits of sustainable, locally-grown organic food. She is a member of An Taisce and accepted a gift of one of our native Irish Oaks. These were grown by our Learning about Forests - LEAF Ireland Programme Manager, Rachel Geary and we were delighted to share them from our stand at yesterday's event.

We loved having the chance to be able to talk to so many people in-person, share some of the work of An Taisce more widely, and have an opportunity to sign up lovely new members to welcome them into our growing membership community.

There were some big themes notable from yesterday with deep concerns over Ireland's worsening soil health from the impacts of overloading the land with nutrients, worsening water quality and how to help repair damage and farm sustainably.

We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a difference to shape Ireland’s Nature Restoration Plan.

Ireland is facing a nature and biodiversity crisis – 90% of Ireland’s protected habitats are in ‘unfavourable’ conservation status, with around half showing deteriorating trends.

The Environmental Pillar is urging members of the public to make a submission to the public consultation on Ireland’s first nature restoration plan. Irish people have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a difference for nature. The public are being asked for their views on Ireland’s Nature ...

Today marks the start of Invasive Species Week! 🚫🌱

Did you know that invasive plants and animals can pose a threat to our beaches, seas, and native marine life. 🤔

To help stop their spread remember the CHECK, CLEAN, and DRY code. Every small action makes a big impact for our coastal habitats. 💙

This is global warming — temperature change in Ireland since 1850.

This image is designed to spread awareness about climate change using the iconic ‘warming stripes’ graphics showing temperature trends over the last 100+ years.

Each coloured stripe represents the annual average temperature in a given year relative to a long-term average.

Our actions do matter.

Support climate actions to reduce fossil fuels and damaging practices: Ireland is not on track to meet its 2030 targets. We need to keep pressuring our leaders to fulfil the commitments they've made on our behalf in the Climate Action Plan and under EU obligations.

Embrace sustainable habits: Make sustainable choices in your everyday life. Reduce/remove single-use plastics, choose eco-friendly products, prioritise a plant-based diet, opt for sustainable fashion and transportation. Small changes can have a big impact.

Be vocal and engage with others: Spread awareness about the climate crisis and the importance of environmental stewardship.

An Taisce has some exciting news to share — and it spans two continents!

This spring, we were thrilled to welcome Mary Anthony — seconded to An Taisce from the The 1772 Foundation, Inc. She led two international study trips as part of the Foundation's Advisor Exchange Program, bringing American historic preservation leaders to see some of the world's most inspiring built heritage work up close.

In May, Lauren McHale and Katie Williams from The L'Enfant Trust visited Ireland — touring Inis Meáin in the Aran Islands (home to Teach Synge, the centrepiece of our 2027 World Monuments Watch nomination for Stone Thatched Cottages of the Gaeltacht 🏡), meeting with Irish Landmark Trust, Hearth Historic Buildings Trust in Belfast, and gathering with Dublin Heritage Professionals to share ideas and strategies.

In June, a second cohort — Myrick Howard, Kim Trent, Kathy Kottaridis, and Emily Hopkins — travelled to London and Amsterdam, meeting with The Spitalfields Trust, the Architectural Heritage Fund, Stadsherstel Amsterdam, and leading Dutch heritage finance institutions. Revolving funds, heritage-led regeneration, and what makes these models work at scale were front and centre.

Both trips connect directly to the new Historic Properties Revolving Fund Programme that Mary is helping An Taisce develop — bringing a proven model for saving endangered buildings to Ireland, where it's needed most.

We couldn't be more grateful to the 1772 Foundation for their partnership, or more excited about where this programme is headed.

An Taisce is delighted to share an exciting development in our historic properties work — and the international momentum building behind it.

Water quality and Irish aquaculture:
Astonishing to learn — not only that companies continue operating for years with an out-of-date licence — but effectively there's also no oversight of the environmental impacts of these commercial operations.
