Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)🌍🌱
Ireland’s fifth Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Week is taking place this year from 19 to 27 September.

Sustainable development means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The SDGs apply equally to every country and are based on the idea that ending poverty, protecting the environment and strengthening human rights are mutually beneficial and reliant on each other for success, and cannot be achieved separately.

Projects operated by APA with CVM and local partners are helping to reach the targets to:

✅Support Quality Education (Goal 4,)
✅Promote Gender Equality (Goal 5)
✅Offer Clean Water & Sanitation (Goal 6)

✨Our Patron, Ruth Negga starring in new RTE Series✨
APA is delighted to see our patron, Ruth Negga featuring in a new series "Trinity Treasures" on RTE exploring Trinity College's Old Library.

Ruth is an internationally acclaimed Limerick actress, with multiple award nominations, including:
🏆An Oscar nomination (2017) for her leading role in Loving.
🏆Her second Emmy nomination (2025) for Presumed Innocent.

Ruth has been a dedicated patron of APA for many years and we and grateful for her continued support.

🌎July 30th World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

CVM – Community Volunteers for the World, in collaboration with APA – A Partnership with Africa and the government authorities of Tanzania, recently organized in Arusha the Regional Seminar on Human Trafficking (TIP) and Safe Migration.

Participants highlighted the risks faced by girls recruited with false promises of domestic work and by children with disabilities, often victims of exploitation through organized begging networks.

One of the main outcomes of the seminar was the establishment of the Regional TIP Working Group which will play a key role in the development of shared strategies to prevent and combat human trafficking that especially affects those living in the most vulnerable conditions and requires a response that goes beyond mere repression.

Prevention means understanding the phenomenon, recognizing its signs, creating greater awareness, and empowering institutions to intervene promptly and in a coordinated manner.

From the Streets Back to School 💛📚

Every child deserves the chance to learn, play, and dream about the future.

For Wubrist Fekadu, that future once seemed out of reach. After losing her father, she was forced to leave school at just 9 years old and spent the next three years working as a street vendor in Finote Selam, Ethiopia, simply to survive.

Today, her story is one of hope.

With the support of APA and CVM, Wubrist is back in school, making friends, rediscovering the joy of learning, and dreaming of one day becoming a doctor.

"Thanks to the project, I have made good friends in school and I have much more hope for the future." – Wubrist

Working Together to Combat Human Trafficking 🤝

In Shinyanga, Tanzania, APA and CVM, together with the Tanzanian authorities, continue their commitment to preventing and combating trafficking in persons through the Empowered II project.

The Regional Seminar on Trafficking in Persons brought together participants to share experiences, strengthen collaboration, and build practical knowledge on identifying the signs of trafficking and protecting those most at risk.

By supporting training, cooperation, and stronger institutional capacity, the Empowered II project is helping create safer communities and protect the rights of vulnerable people.

Through partnership and knowledge-sharing, we can strengthen protection for vulnerable people and help prevent human trafficking.

🌍 World Youth Skills Day July 15th | Skills for a Shared Future

Today, on World Youth Skills Day, we celebrate the knowledge, creativity and practical skills that empower young people to shape a fairer and more sustainable world.

The 2026 theme, “Skills for a Shared Future,” highlights the importance of preparing young people to lead with empathy, communicate across cultures, build resilience and contribute to inclusive, peaceful and sustainable societies.

Through Global Education Time Youth Actions, students across Ireland develop skills in critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity and active citizenship as they explore global challenges and lead positive change.

Skills development is also central to APA and CVM projects in Ethiopia and Tanzania, where young people and domestic workers gain practical, vocational, leadership and advocacy skills that support new opportunities and stronger communities.

Empowering Young People to Create Change 🌍

Young people have the power to shape a brighter future for their communities.

As part of the Africa for Tomorrow project, APA and CVM recently held a three-day Peer Education Training in the Morogoro and Pwani regions of Tanzania. Students, teachers, and young domestic workers came together to build knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills.

Through interactive workshops and group activities, participants explored topics including sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS prevention, education, domestic workers' rights, and future planning.

By empowering young people to become peer educators and advocates for their rights, the Africa for Tomorrow project is helping build stronger, more informed, and more resilient communities.

💛 Investing in young people means investing in a better future.

Education for a sustainable future📚

As the school we wish all students an enjoyable break.
During the year APA Global Education Team ran workshops with second level students discussing the four global challenges of International Inequalities, Climate Change Migration and Gender Inequalities.

Our newly developed teaching and learning Units (TLUs), help young people develop critical thinking, empathy, and active citizenship through creative, student-led projects.

Celebrating International Domestic Workers Day🎉✨

On June 16th we celebrate the anniversary of the adoption of the Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189). Since that historic event - the first time that domestic work was recognised as real work - June 16th has become known as domestic workers’ day.

Around the world, over 75 million domestic workers support the very fabric of our homes, families, and communities. As care needs rise - with 2.3 billion people expected to require care services by 2030 - their contributions are more essential than ever.

Yet many domestic workers remain unprotected or invisible in labour policies. Over 80% work informally, often without access to social protection or job security. During emergencies, they are too often the first to lose work - and the last to receive support.

This year, domestic workers’ day honours the quiet strength and care of domestic workers, especially in times of crisis. APA and CVM are raising awareness of the persistent barriers they face and calling for real change through decent work and the ratification of the Domestic Workers Convention, 2011.

In Bagamoyo, Tanzania, there were celebratations where 25 domestic workers, 10 of whom were underage, who until recently were working were able to go back to school and study 📚🏫
