Heartbreaking

Imagine being a child, taken from your family and sent to an isolated institution on the edge of Connemara. For generations of boys, that place was Letterfrack Industrial School.

St Joseph’s Industrial School opened at Letterfrack in 1887 and was run by the Christian Brothers. Boys were sent there for reasons that could include poverty, neglect, being orphaned, or offences that today might seem minor.

But what was life actually like behind its walls?

The Ryan Report, published in 2009, documented Letterfrack's brutal history.

Former residents described severe physical punishment, fear, humiliation and sexual abuse.

The Commission found that excessive corporal punishment was pervasive and that sexual abuse by members of the Christian Brothers occurred.

Letterfrack eventually closed in 1974.

For many survivors, however, leaving did not mean escaping what happened there.

Another afront and attack on Women.

Imagine going into an Irish hospital to give birth, only to undergo an operation that would leave you suffering for decades.

For hundreds of women, this was a reality.

Symphysiotomy involved cutting through the cartilage of the p***c joint to widen the pelvis during childbirth. While the procedure had largely fallen out of favour elsewhere, it continued to be performed in Ireland during the 20th century.

Many survivors said they were never properly informed or asked for meaningful consent. Women later described chronic pain, difficulty walking, incontinence and lasting psychological trauma.

The practice eventually became the subject of investigations, campaigning and demands for justice. In 2014, the Irish Government established an ex-gratia payment scheme for women who had undergone surgical symphysiotomy or pubiotomy.

But for survivors, compensation could never give them back the decades affected by what happened.

How was a procedure with such potentially devastating consequences allowed to continue for so long, and do you think Ireland has ever properly confronted what these women endured?
