🎙️ Speaking on Clare FM's Morning Focus with Alan Morrissey, INTO CEC District 11 representative Gareth Heagney outlined why Budget 2027 must deliver 1,000 more primary teachers to help reduce class sizes and support pupils across Ireland.

Gareth also highlighted the challenges facing small rural schools in Clare, warning of the impact school closures could have on local communities and access to education.

💬 "The government's failure to honour its own commitment in the Programme for Government to reduce class sizes is having a really significant impact, both on teachers and children in Ireland," the District 11 representative said.

Our schools need support. Email your TDs and urge them to deliver on our budget ask: https://www.into.ie/campaign/budget2027/

The first episode of the series features the INTO’s John Boyle and Máirín Ní Chéileachair, alongside CEC rep Gerard Murray (District 6) , taking listeners through:

- Mounting Government delays in reducing class sizes to the EU average of 19
- Zero changes to the appointment and retention figures for primary teachers
- And how 80% of Irish primary school pupils are learning in supersized classes!

For RTE Brainstorm, DCU academic Dr Audrey Doyle looks at how the idea of the syllabus has changed since her own school days. The modern syllabus means that parents might need a fresh approach to how they encourage their children, as they set off for school each morning.

"For students who find the social aspect of school daunting, classrooms today are framed by strong values of inclusion to diversity and equity," she writes.

The INTO’s General Secretary John Boyle joined Tommy Marren on Midwest Radio this morning to discuss teacher shortages and class sizes in Mayo. He urged the Minister for Education and the Cabinet to take action in the upcoming budget, to deliver on its overdue promise to reduce Ireland’s class sizes and reverse teacher shortages.

“Surely [the Minister] has to break the mould within Fine Gael, and show rural Ireland that she actually cares about their small schools and the teachers working in them, and the children. And now is [Minister Naugton's] chance with the budget. We’re only asking for €20 million; it’s a very small ask, in fact it’s the smallest ask this union has made in a pre-budget campaign in 10 years.”
