Dublin Bay Biosphere

Connecting people and nature. The partnership works with community groups, NGOs, local businesses and schools.

Dublin Bay Biosphere (Bithsfeir Chuan Bhaile Atha Cliath) was designated in 2015 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). It is managed by the Dublin Bay Biosphere Partnership, which includes Dublin City Council, Dublin Port Company, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Fingal County Council and the National Parks & Wildlife Service.

Delighted to attend the launch of the PEACEPLUS-funded UNESCO Together programme in Belfast yesterday, bringing together UNESCO sites from across the island of Ireland.

Hosted by Belfast UNESCO City of Music, the event marked the beginning of an exciting new all-island partnership connecting UNESCO sites through culture, heritage, learning, sustainability and community collaboration.

It was inspiring to meet colleagues from UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, Global Geoparks, Creative Cities and World Heritage sites, and to explore opportunities for future collaboration through interactive discussions, networking and the UNESCO Together showcase.

A particular highlight was the poet Jessica Traynor Jess Traynor recite her beautiful work including the Liffey Swim, Dublin Port Diving Bell and the North Bull Island – places all very close to the Biosphere’s heart!

The programme also included a welcome from the Youth Rangers of the Mourne Gullion Strangford UNESCO Global Geopark, UNESCO Bingo networking sessions, creative showcases from UNESCO Creative Cities, and collaborative workshops focused on building a stronger UNESCO network across Ireland.

The Dublin Bay UNESCO Biosphere is proud to be part of this initiative and looks forward to working with UNESCO partners across the island to share knowledge, strengthen connections, and support sustainable futures for our communities and landscapes.

Today we were delighted to welcome EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall, Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, to North Bull Island and the Dublin Bay UNESCO Biosphere.

Dublin City Council’s Parks, Biodiversity and Landscape Services team, led by Les Moore, together with our partners in the National Parks and Wildlife Service, briefed the Commissioner on the outstanding ecological significance of North Bull Island and its central role within the Dublin Bay UNESCO Biosphere.

The visit highlighted the management and conservation of the island’s internationally important habitats and species, as well as the collaborative efforts underway to enhance biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience and deepen community engagement across the Biosphere.

Thank you, Commissioner Roswall, for taking the time to visit and learn more about the challenges and opportunities facing one of Ireland’s most important coastal ecosystems. Together, through partnership, stewardship and shared learning, we can continue to protect and enhance this unique place for nature and people.

What a fab weekend at St Anne’s Park !!

A massive thanks to all brilliant organisations that made the Biodiversity Village such a success, helped in no small part by the amazing weather. From discovering the importance of seals to worms, from foraging to composting, we came away inspired by the passion and knowledge on display throughout the weekend.

Thanks also to everyone who stopped by our stall for a chat about the Dublin Bay Biosphere. It was great to meet so many curious, passionate people, and we learned just as much from you as you did from us. Hopefully, those conversations about nature, biodiversity and Dublin Bay will continue with your family, friends and colleagues.

Thanks to all who took part in the flora and fauna walk and talk today on the Bull Island as part of National Biodiversity Week. The walk was led by Proinsias Mac an Bheatha author of Wildlife of Bull Island and local expert on the island. It was a fabulous day with so much learning and knowledge sharing. We protect what we love and this made us all love the island a little bit more. Go raibh maith agat Proinsias!! 🙏🌊🏝🌱🐦🦭✨️

📢 Dune Workshop Announcement! 📢

We’re thrilled to team up with ACT (Accelerating Change Together) and partners across Ireland to bring a full day of dune skills, learning, and action to North Bull Island on Wednesday, 6th May!
Alongside the Climate Action Regional Office (CARO), Leave No Trace Ireland, UCD, University of Galway and Clean Coasts, and hosted by Dublin City Council, this workshop will empower coastal communities to protect, monitor, and restore our precious dune systems. Autumn action days with to follow! 🌱

🌿 Youth voices matter – and we want to hear them!

We’ve launched a National Youth Engagement Survey to better understand how young people (aged 18–35) connect with our Dublin Bay and Kerry UNESCO biosphere reserves – and, importantly, what may be holding them back from getting involved.

Whether you’re already engaged in environmental and cultural initiatives or simply interested in shaping a more sustainable future, your insights are important to us!
- Identify barriers to participation
- Strengthen inclusive and meaningful engagement
- Inform outreach strategies across our biosphere reserve network
- Support the goals of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme
