Everything in this cage started somewhere on land.

A dropped wrapper.
A takeaway cup.
A plastic bag caught by the wind.

The river remembers what the city forgets.

📸 Container cranes and ship photo

Most people think of the Spire, the Custom House or the Guinness Storehouse when they picture Dublin.

But for those working on the water, this is the skyline.

The Port of Dublin handles millions of tonnes of cargo every year and keeps much of the country supplied with everything from food to fuel.

Not a bad office view. âš“

Things people don’t usually think about with river litter:

A lot of it sinks before anyone sees it.
A lot gets trapped in seaweed and quay ladders.
And a surprising amount breaks apart into smaller bits before it can even be collected.

The obvious stuff is only part of the problem.

There is something deeply satisfying about clearing a patch of river completely.

For about 11 minutes.

Then the tide turns.

Before most of Dublin has had coffee…

The river has already delivered:
• timber
• plastics
• seaweed tangles
• mystery sludge
• at least one thing nobody wants to identify

A lot of river litter doesn’t arrive dramatically.

It comes one coffee cup at a time.
One wrapper.
One bottle cap.
One bag blowing off a quay wall.

The EPA estimates around half of Ireland’s surface waters are not currently meeting “good ecological status”.

Urban rivers take constant pressure from runoff, plastics and waste.

You can actually see it building up day by day out here.

Hard to beat a day like this on the Liffey.

Blue skies.
Flat water.
Dublin looking unreal.

Even the rubbish looked scenic today.

(Still picked it up though.)

People sometimes imagine river cleaning is dramatic.

Most of it actually looks like this.

Slow passes.
Watching currents.
Spotting movement.
Picking things out one by one before they disappear downstream.

Quiet work.
But important work.

We should probably start keeping a leaderboard for the weirdest thing pulled from the river.

Current contenders:
• tennis ball
• half a crate
• mystery floating timber
• approximately 7,000 snack wrappers
• one shoe (not pictured)

Open to guesses for what we’ll find next.
