Dublin Festival of History 2026

The programme for the 2026 Dublin Festival of History has been announced. The festival runs from 26 September to 11 October 2026.

The annual free festival, brought to you by Dublin City Libraries, in partnership with the Dublin City Council Culture Company, has built a reputation for shining a fresh perspective on history and its importance in our everyday lives, attracting best-selling Irish and international historians to Dublin for a high-profile programme of history talks and debate each Autumn. Pitch Upgrade for Vicar Street

Dublin City Council in partnership with the FAI have announced plans to upgrade the hard surface play area at Vicar Street to an all weather turf surface. The project is being done under the FIFA Arenas programme which is supporting rapid build, medium-term play areas in urban centre across the world.

Meanwhile in a further development for sports facilities in The Liberties, planning permission has been granted for an upgrading of the Liberty Saints RFC play area at Basin Lane to become an all weather double playing pitch. The redevelopment is being led by Sporting Liberties with philanthropic support.

Meath Street Works Update

Construction work continues on Meath Street, as part of a significant revamp of the street. The current focus of construction is the section from the junction with Engine Alley and Meath Place to South Earl Street, which is expected to be completed by November.

This will mean approximately two-thirds of the street will be completed before a planned break in the construction programme for Christmas. Work will then begin on the final northern portion of the street in early 2027.

Many of the new features on the street are already visible including Leinster granite detailing, new benches and the locations for trees. In total 16 trees are planned for the street - with beautiful sophora japonica (Japanese pagoda trees) chosen. The arrival of trees and new lighting columns later this year will fully complete work at the south end and bring the design of the street together.

While most of the street has been paved in concrete flagstones, a substantial area around St Catherine's Church will be paved in Leinster granite, improving the setting of the church.

The Liberties Running Club and charity Shannon’s Hopeline have been entered by Dublin City Council to represent the city in this year’s IPB Pride of Place Awards. The running group, which was set up in 2024 has been transforming approaches to sport and fitness in the area since it began, engaging people who might never have taken up road running. Meanwhile Shannon’s Hopeline has been supporting families in crisis for over 10 years.

The entrants make their big pitch to the Judges this coming Friday. We wish them the very best ! 🤞

College Football Comes to Dublin

As part of the 2026 College Football Classic celebrations in Dublin, Teeling Distillery at Newmarket will host a live performance by the University of North Carolina (UNC) Marching Band and Cheer Squad outside the distillery on Friday, 28 August, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm.

The event welcomes local residents, visitors and travelling supporters, with attendees asked to assemble from approximately 11:30am and activity continuing until 2:00pm.

The performance forms part of the wider programme of activities surrounding the College Football Classic that sure to bring a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere to The Liberties, Its a great opportunity for fans and visitors alike to experience one of the landmark events associated with the game week celebrations!
