The recent Multicultural Women’s Breakfast was for World Refugee Day on the 19th of June at Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, Monkstown. Below is a summary of the event – take whatever you like from it:

The Multicultural Women’s Breakfast during Refugee Week was a truly memorable and uplifting event. 56 women attended including 21 different nationalities and diverse backgrounds. The morning kicked off with a fun and engaging ice-breaker - combining a lively mix of musical chairs and speed-friending.

The heart of the event was the sharing of personal journeys by three incredible women – Sandra Mpufo (Zimbabwe), Dr. Fardus Sultan (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and Rezan Manan (Sudan). Each story was unique, deeply moving, and showed a great amount of self-determination.

Rezan led the ‘Steps to the Bridge’ workshop - the integration piece to create dialogue between the migrant, refugee and the Irish women. To wrap up, everyone joined in a joyful “freedom dance” to Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves by the Eurythmics – a fitting anthem to celebrate the strength and unity of women.

The event was not only a celebration of multiculturalism but a testament to the strength, spirit, and shared humanity of women everywhere. It was also a joy to meet so many incredible women from diverse backgrounds and enjoy a spread of delicious international food together, including Hidden Moroccan Delights by Master Chef Ghizlaine Lahlali!

This event was funded by the Community Integration Fund and the Local Authority Integration Team and organised by the women4women Network in conjunction with the Southside Partnership Women’s Programme.

Majeda Khouri is a foodie with a mission. Or, more precisely, an activist who likes to cook.
She combines the two in the London-based Syrian Sunflower, the social enterprise she set up as she re-made her life after fleeing civil war.

A big congratulations to Edena Foot of Loreto Bray, who earlier this week won first place in the National ReLove Fashion Awards ‘Evening Dress’ category. Edena and her very proud father, Steven Foot, were standing beside her beautiful upcycled dress at the awards ceremony in the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun.

The dress was made from old jeans bought in a charity shop and inspired by aquatic life and the pollution caused by fast fashion. Using techniques like patchwork, embroidery, pattern making, and superb stitching, she created a very stylish dress that could be easily worn to any summer’s evening party. We see a bright future ahead for fashion with people like Edena striving for sustainable clothes.

The ReLove Fashion initiative is aimed at secondary school students and youth groups and supported through the Environmental Awareness Office.
