We have been offline for a while having previously won our case but regrouping in an effort to provide information and also raise funds for a judicial review on the recent An Bord Pleanala’s approval for the Greater Dublin Drainage Project to now go ahead.
We have thoroughly examined the proposal, spoken to experts and are extremely concerned about the risks to public health and our fragile land and marine environments.
Media reports and some of those in authority have tried to discredit us by claiming a lone swimmer is objecting or we are NIMBY’s (Not In My Back Yard) or BANANA’s (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone)
But, this isn’t about opposing development it’s about protecting biodiversity, our marine eco systems and the health and safety of future generations as well as looking at environmentally sustainable alternatives which we know exist.
You can see in previous posts how we have spoken to wetland specialists who have offered safer alternatives suitable for Ireland’s wastewater needs.
Also, a third of this plant’s effluent comes from a major company in Kildare, (adding further concern in regard to toxic chemicals. ) We believe that these type of companies should be dealing with and funding their own wastewater through innovative environmentally friendly alternative methods instead of the Irish taxpayer funding the bill. This would also reduce the need for another massive plant as it’s important to remember that if this project goes ahead, between Ringsend Wastewater plant and the proposed Clonshaugh plant, over half the population of Ireland’s effluent will be going into the UNESCO Dublin Bay Biosphere.
Communities living further inland are also hugely concerned. There has been no assessment of the biogas storage facility attached to the plant in Clonshaugh that will be directly under the flight path beside built up areas of Coolock, Darndale, Balgriffin, Clongriffin, Kinseally and the airport itself.
In addition, Odour/Air Quality was not assessed in line with Air Quality Directive updates & standards. We have been told at an Oral Hearing in 2019 that there will be odours from the plant that will obviously impact on schools, recreational and residential areas in the vicinity.
These are only some of our concerns, but there are many more.
We are surprised that many people from areas adjacent to the plant are not aware that it has been approved and how they might be affected. This particularly applies to new builds in Portmarnock, Balgriffin, Northern Cross and surrounding areas. Please share on your community WhatsApps and social media groups to anyone in those areas.
We are in court in early December and have a good legal team fighting our case but need to raise funding to cover costs. Please spread the word and donate if possible to the link below. 🙏🌊🐬
