VLM are delighted to report that the new building at the Ambo Lazarist Deaf School (ALDS) in Ethiopia was officially opened last week. The building has been over 18 months in development and contains a large multipurpose hall, library, IT room, staff room and a vocational training centre for sewing. This will give deaf students the chance to learn skills offering them opportunities for employment and the chance to reach their full potential. The hall will be rented out for community events outside of school hours, helping the school become self-sustainable. VLM were able to bring this building to fruition thanks to a total of an incredible €280,000 in funding from Misean Cara, St Vincent’s Castleknock College, , , the Vincentian Solidarity Office (VSO), many generous VLM donors, and with support from the Vincentian Fathers in Ireland. Huge thank you to everyone who made it possible. This is a fantastic development for the Vincentian mission in Ambo. Updates to follow as this building is brought to life by the students. Please continue to support our work as we ‘do one thing, do something’ in solidarity with our Vincentian partners across Africa.

VLM volunteer Irene Powis has just returned from a placement in Matisi and Chepnyal, Kenya. Irene is a social worker, specialising in human trafficking and ran sessions on Gender Equality. Equality starts with awareness, but it grows through action. VLM believes in creating a world where everyone has access to opportunities, leadership, education and a future without discrimination. We support school places for girls and women's empowerment projects. To volunteer with VLM please contact us now.

World Water Day is held on 22nd March every year, focusing on the importance of fresh water and to raise awareness of the 2.1 billion people living without access to safe water. The theme for 2026 is ‘Gender and Water’. Women and girls worldwide spend 250 million hours a day collecting water, 3 times more than men and boys; taking them away from opportunities in education, paid employment and community leadership. The Daughters of Charity are water champions in Matisi, Kenya, working to install wells in local communities. Pictured above are some of the VLM Schools Immersion Programme participants from 2025 visiting one of the community wells.
