During Pastoral Care Week, we gathered at St Joseph's Centre, Shankill,for a Ritual of Blessing of Hands.

Every hand in this montage belongs to someone who joined us on the day: our residents living with dementia, our team and everyone who came along to share the moment.

Our residents’ hands have worked, cared, held and comforted over a lifetime, and they carry the stories of the lives they have lived. Alongside them are the hands that offer care and support every day. For people living with dementia, a gentle touch and a quiet moment together can say what words sometimes cannot.

The ceremony gave us a chance to pause, give thanks and recognise the care, connection and dignity at the heart of our home.

A heartfelt thank you to Laura Madrigal-Estebas for bringing us together, and to everyone who took part and shared their hands with us.

Because every hand tells a story.

As Pastoral Care Week comes to a close, we’re reflecting on Seven Habits For The Heart, a week of small gestures that bring hope, dignity, compassion and healing.

At St Joseph's Centre, Shankill, Shankill, pastoral care is part of everyday life in our home. It is in the time we take to listen, to be present and to see the person behind every moment. For people living with dementia, these small acts of kindness nurture connection, comfort and belonging.

A heartfelt thank you to Laura Madrigal-Estebas and Jince Thomas for everything they did to mark Pastoral Care Week at St Joseph’s Centre.

Thank you also to our whole team, who carry these habits with them every day, not only this week.

Because small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s day.

What do you remember about October Bank Holiday weekends?
🎃 Halloween costumes, spooky fun and childhood memories...
⏰ An extra hour in bed when the clocks go back...
🏃‍♂️ And, of course, the Irish Life Dublin City Marathon!

This year, we're delighted that Ciarán Byrne is taking on the marathon challenge on behalf of St. Joseph's, running in memory of his dad, the legendary "Fast Eddie" as he was affectionately known.
As families enjoy the Bank Holiday festivities and Halloween celebrations, Ciarán will be pounding the streets of Dublin, and we're sure trying to live up to his dad's memory as 'Fast Eddie' and also raising vital funds to support the care we provide at St Joseph's, and which we had the honour of providing to his Dad and Ciaran's family in the last few months of Eddie's life.
We're sure Fast Eddie would be enormously proud.

If you are out on the route this weekend please look out for Ciaran and cheer him on and, if you can, support his fundraising efforts please do!

Every donation, no matter the size, will make a real difference.

It was a joy to welcome Siofra and Allanh, Festina Lente’s Shetland ponies, back to St Joseph’s Centre, Shankill.

Siofra and Allanh visit us a few times a year with the Festina Lente team. On this visit, they came to say hello to everyone and toured our lodges.

Visits like these bring comfort, connection and plenty of smiles for people living with dementia. They also offer a chance to share a gentle moment in good company.

Thank you to the Festina Lente team for bringing Siofra and Allanh to see us once again.

Celebrating 25 years of Helena Larkin at St Joseph’s Centre!

Our team came together to mark this special milestone with Helena, sharing cake, flowers and a heartfelt thank you for her dedication over the past 25 years.

Helena joined St Joseph’s in 2001 and has been part of our community ever since. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate her contribution and everything she brings to the team.

Congratulations, Helena, and thank you for 25 years of care and commitment.

A morning to celebrate the people who help make St Joseph’s Centre a welcoming place for everyone.

Our team came together for a celebratory breakfast to mark Thank Your Cleaner Day, enjoying everything from breakfast rolls to fruit, smoothies and pancakes.

To our cleaning team, thank you for the care and hard work you put into every day. Your contribution makes a real difference to our residents, families and colleagues.

A heartfelt thank you to our friends at The Carrickmines Golf Club for their continued generosity and support for St Joseph’s Centre.

We were delighted to welcome Club Captains Suzie and Igor, along with club members Ann and Michael, yesterday and share how their fundraising will support the care of people living with dementia at St Joseph’s Centre.

To everyone who has given their time, donated or supported the club’s fundraising efforts, thank you. Your kindness means so much to the people who call St Joseph’s Centre home, their families and our team.

St Joseph’s Centre, Shankill is recruiting Healthcare Assistants who are compassionate, attentive and committed to person-centred dementia care.

You will support people with their everyday care needs, taking time to understand their preferences and feelings, and helping make daily moments meaningful.

If you hold a FETAC Level 5 Healthcare Support Certificate, have experience supporting older people and people living with dementia, and two to three years’ experience in the Irish healthcare system, we would be pleased to hear from you.

Our next Memory Café takes place on Tuesday, 13 October 2026 at 10.30am in Loughlinstown Community Rooms.

The Memory Café is a warm, welcoming space for people living with dementia, their families, friends, carers, healthcare professionals and members of the community to come together over conversation, connection and support.

This month, we are pleased to welcome Deirdre Murphy from Garda Community Policing, who will speak on “Safety in the Home and Personal Safety when Out and About.” Deirdre will share practical advice on staying safe at home and in the community.
