For a child in hospital, play can make a huge difference. It helps them understand what is happening around them, prepare for treatments and procedures, and feel more at ease during what can often be an unfamiliar and challenging time. It also gives them space to simply be a child.

For parents, play can offer something just as important — reassurance. Seeing their child engaged, calmer, or smiling, even for a short time, can bring huge comfort during a difficult journey.

Today, as we mark International Day of Play, hear from Emma Fratangelo, Professional Lead for Healthcare Play at CHI Crumlin, as she shares how play supports both children and families through hospital life.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Children’s Health Foundation helps fund play services, equipment and resources that make these moments possible every day.

Tomorrow is International Day of Play ❤️

For children in hospital, play is not just a way to pass the time. It is part of their care.

When a child is anxious, their body goes into a stress response. This can make it harder for them to rest and recover. Play helps ease this by giving children comfort, distraction, and a sense of control in a place that can often feel unfamiliar.

At Children’s Health Foundation, we are proud to support play services, equipment, and resources across CHI hospitals. This work is made possible thanks to our supporters, partners, and communities.

This International Day of Play, we're celebrating the important role play can have in supporting children's wellbeing and hospital experience.

Eamon Dolan was a proud member of the P&T, Telecom Éireann and Eir Athletic Club from its early days. A talented runner, he contributed to many successful BHAA teams and proudly represented the company throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including overseas trips.

In later years, Eamon became closely involved with the Dublin Marathon as the Men’s Lead Driver, leading out the race each year. He was also a familiar face and voice at the Marathon Expo, where he spoke about the route, the start and finish, and the excitement of race weekend. Many said marathon weekend truly began when they heard Eamon’s voice at the Expo.

Eamon was a likeable and witty character who is sorely missed by all who knew him.

In 2025, Eamon’s nephews, Anthony and Liam, ran the Dublin Marathon in his memory. As Eamon had done extensive charity work for Children's Health Ireland at Crumlin hospital, they chose to continue that tradition in his honour. Completing their first marathon together was made even more special when they received their medals from their cousin Eimear, Eamon’s daughter, who presents medals at the marathon each year.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters, €3,500 was raised for Children’s Health Foundation. On 12th May, the first anniversary of Eamon’s passing, his family, Dublin Marathon director Jim Aughney and his friend Eamonn Coughlan presented the donation in recognition of Eamon’s support of the marathon and his charity work. ❤️

The 2 Johnnies have raised an incredible €200,000 for sick children and their families across Ireland. 💛

Today, ahead of their sold-out show in St. Anne’s Park, The 2 Johnnies presented a cheque to Children’s Health Foundation following an extraordinary fundraising effort inspired by a deeply personal experience.

Earlier this year, Johnny Smacks and his wife Annie welcomed their son JJ, who spent several weeks receiving specialist care at CHI Crumlin. Inspired by the care and support their family received, they turned gratitude into action.

Through their Big Big Family Show at the 3Arena and a special charity jersey campaign, supporters across Ireland came together to make a real difference for sick children.

The funds raised will help support rehabilitation equipment, sensory spaces, therapy and play programmes, as well as innovative research and medical equipment.

Thank you to the 2 Johnnies, Annie, JJ, and everyone who attended, donated, or showed their support. Together, you're helping give every sick child the very best chance. 💛

A hospital procedure involving needles can feel overwhelming for a child. That’s why at Children’s Health Foundation, we are proud to have funded “Needle Heroes” - an initiative launched by Children's Health Ireland to help children feel calmer, informed, and more in control during needle procedures. 💛

Following yesterday’s launch, it was wonderful to welcome RTÉ to Children's Health Ireland at Temple Street to showcase how this innovative programme is already helping reduce fear and anxiety for children and families attending Children's Health Ireland hospitals.

"Needle Heroes" provides practical resources and child-friendly support to help make needle procedures less frightening and more manageable. From preparation tips for parents to personalised “Hero Plans”, coping techniques and distraction tools, the programme empowers children to better understand what will happen and feel more confident during their hospital experience.

Because every child deserves not only the best clinical care, but also emotional support and compassion throughout their healthcare journey.

Thank you to our incredible supporters for helping make initiatives like this possible.

Last week, World Bee Day brought moments of joy and learning to sick children and families across Children's Health Ireland hospitals. 🐝💛

Through beekeeper visits, hands-on activities and bee-themed treats, the Sparkle Committee and hospital teams helped create a brighter, more child-friendly environment for patients and families. ✨

When a child is in hospital, experiences like these can make all the difference. They help reduce anxiety, create moments of normality, and support emotional wellbeing during what can often be an incredibly difficult time.

Thanks to the support of our donors and fundraisers, Children’s Health Foundation can support initiatives like these, and help create meaningful moments.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day so special. 🐝

Running for Ava.

This Sunday, Emma O'Brien will lace up her runners and take on the VHI Women's Mini Marathon, carrying her niece Ava with her every step of the way.

Ava was just 14 years old when she passed away after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was a gifted artist, an Irish dancer, and by all accounts the warmest, most positive soul, smiling through her illness and always worrying about everyone else before herself.

Emma is running in support of Children's Health Foundation, who cared for Ava at CHI Crumlin. "Who else would I go for?" she says. "The level of care, how warm everyone was, it was such a personal level of care."

She'll be wearing a photo of Ava on her T-shirt. "She'll be at the forefront of my mind as I take off."

Over 170 women are joining Team Children's Health Foundation this weekend. Every runner carries a reason. Every step helps support sick children. 💛
