Ireland’s Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan TD said the deportation of foreign nationals convicted of serious crimes will continue after 34 men from Poland and Lithuania were expelled from the country on Sunday.

Speaking at Dublin Airport during the launch of the new eGates, he said that freedom of movement within the European Union comes with conditions and can be lost if someone commits serious crimes. He also said that the concerns of victims are considered before deportations take place.

The airport’s new eGates feature advanced facial recognition technology and support for identity cards, and the number of passengers using them is expected to increase this year.

Yesterday we joined our neighbours at the Cabra For All Intercultural Potluck in Deaf Village, Cabra — and what a day it was.

We brought a full Somali table: sambuusa, bur, malawax, sabaayad, bariis iskukaris and meat — the kind of spread that says soo dhowow, you are welcome at our table. Our volunteers also performed dhaanto, the dance of the Somali pastoral plains, and the room moved with us.

Around 15–20 volunteers from the Somali community came out to share food, share rhythm, and meet our neighbours from other community organisations who brought the tastes and traditions of their own homes. There was poetry, song, conversation, and the easy joy that only intercultural gatherings bring.

Thank you to Donnacha and the Cabra For All team for the invitation, and to every neighbour who tried something new today. This is what community in Ireland looks like — many tables, one room, everyone welcome.

President Connolly convenes meeting of the Council of State

Uachtarán na hÉireann, Catherine Connolly has convened a meeting of the Council of State under Article 26 of the Constitution, to be held at Áras an Uachtaráin on Monday, 20 April 2026 at 2.30pm, for the purpose of her hearing from the Council regarding the constitutionality of the International Protection Bill 2026.

Article 26.1.1o of the Constitution states:

“The President may, after consultation with the Council of State, refer any Bill to which this Article applies to the Supreme Court for a decision on the question as to whether such Bill or any specified provision or provisions of such Bill is or are repugnant to this Constitution or to any provision thereof.”

Thus, the question put to the Council is:

Whether the International Protection Bill 2026 should be referred by the President to the Supreme Court for a decision on the question as to whether the Bill or any specified provision or provisions thereof are repugnant to the Constitution or to any provision thereof.
