The Irish government has changed when you can apply for citizenship if granted refugee status and how residency is calculated.

Previously, you could apply for citizenship after 3 years from the date you claimed asylum if you were granted refugee status.

Today, you can apply for citizenship after 5 years of residency from the date you were GRANTED refugee status. The time you spend in the asylum process is no longer taken into consideration according to the government’s information on their website.

We welcome the acquittal of Seán Binder who was being prosecuted by Greek authorities for the human act of preserving life of people on the move. Last year, we joined peer organisations and likeminded individuals in calling for politicians across the EU to reject the Facilitators Package which would entrench, in European law, the prosecution of anyone who saves or attempts to save lives of people on the move drowning at sea. While the acquittal provides relief for people affected, it is worrying that the EU intends to make such prosecutions the norm.

An open letter to the EU demands action to end the criminalisation of migrants and those who stand in solidarity with them. More than 100 signatories, including Statewatch, condemn proposed reforms to EU laws on migrant smuggling and call for an urgent change of approach.

This is a note from a resident sharing the experience coming from work in Cork.

Yesterday I was attacked after work and this is my first time experiencing this and am sooo traumatised.
This two lads walked to me and asked me where I am coming from.
I honestly thought it was a genuine question so the human part of me said work. The next question that followed was what work and I said I am a student nurse and doing my placement at cork university hospital. Then the next thing was what stamp you holding, that was when I realised there is going to be rubbish act.. I didn’t even answer her and this lad pushed me and started yelling at me that go back to your country.. then mentioned this man’s name that he is going to get all of us out of our country and we are stealing their jobs and taking their benefits. The next thing she drag my bag. That was when people approached us and stoped her.
I cried like a babby and couldn’t speak about it till this morning cus am still going through it..
so please stay safe out there

The Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland (Masi) said the idea that the fire was sparked by fireworks made it seem it was the result of a Hallowe’en prank gone wrong, rather than a deliberately dangerous act.

The confusion centred around fireworks first getting blamed for the suspected arson attack.
