Next up in our Happy Hiking series: Treat your feet! 👣⛰️
Your boots or shoes are your best friends on the hills, so choose them wisely.

A few things to look out for:
🥾 Good ankle support and a strong grip
🏃 Lighter footwear can be a great option for well-made trails
👣 Make sure they fit properly — can you wiggle your toes?
🧦 Don't forget your socks! Merino wool, liners, or your personal favourite — the goal is to stay dry and friction-free
🌧️ Gaiters can help keep mud, stones, and debris out of your boots

Happy feet = happy hiking!💚

⛰️Our Access & Environment Manager, Helen Lawless, was at Croagh Patrick on Tuesday with Croagh Patrick Path Manager, Matt McConway, and Rozanne Bell.

🙌 Matt and Rozanne have recently joined the Mountaineering Ireland team and will be working part-time on the Helping the Hills programme, developing a training programme to help people manage and maintain upland paths.

🤝 Along with representatives from Leave No Trace Ireland, they met with Mike McClure and a group from Landscapes NI. The visitors work in protected area management in Northern Ireland and included a visit to Croagh Patrick as part of a short study tour in the west.

👣 Croagh Patrick was busy this week, and it was clear that lots of feet on the mountain mean lots of maintenance is needed. Ongoing work includes removing loose stone from cross-drains, repairing damaged revetment walls, and sweeping the path clear of loose material.

👏 A huge thank you to Frank McMahon, Matt, and the dedicated team of Mountaineering Ireland volunteers who support path maintenance work.

📢 Here's how you can help:

🥾 If climbing Croagh Patrick, please stay within the path line so that habitat restoration on either side can succeed.
🙋‍♀️ We need more volunteers to help look after the Croagh Patrick path. If you'd like to get involved, email 📧 [email protected]
