Climate action must be inclusive of everyone 🌍

We're proud to share that the Sightsavers Sierra Leone country office recently partnered with and participated in the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Sierra Leone 2026, bringing together young people, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to discuss the future of climate action.

With support from Irish Aid through the Ireland's Civil Society Partnership for a Better World (ICSP) programme, the event provided an important platform for young people, including young people with disabilities, to contribute to conversations about climate change and the decisions that affect their futures.

People with disabilities are often disproportionately affected by climate change, yet their voices are too frequently excluded from climate discussions and decision-making.

At Sightsavers Ireland, we're working alongside our partners to change this, supporting meaningful participation and ensuring disability inclusion is central to climate action.

A huge well done to the team in Sierra Leone for securing this partnership and working towards a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future for all.

To celebrate yesterday, the Sightsavers Sierra Leone country office team spent the day with Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Jalikatu Mustapha.

Dr Jalikatu Mustapha trained as an ophthalmologist with Sightsavers, supported by Irish Aid, and was the first female ophthalmologist in Sierra Leone. She was appointed as Deputy Minister of Health in 2023.

“Avoidable blindness isn’t inevitable.” 💛

Ahead of , and following the launch of our Through Their Eyes exhibition, Sightsavers Ireland’s Head of Communications and Public Affairs, Emma Murphy, joined the team at D15 Today on 92.5 Phoenix FM to discuss our work, the exhibition, and the importance of World Sight Day.

In this clip, Emma highlights the proven ways we can protect and restore sight, the need to continue advocating for equitable access to eye health services, and the vital role of local health workers and communities in making progress possible.

The exhibition brings some of the people and stories behind this work closer to audiences here in Ireland, highlighting the importance of equitable access to eye health services around the world 👁🌍

"Politics is where decisions are made. You have to be there, or some groups will always be left behind.”

This , meet Eveline, founder of the Cameroon Association for Blind Women, and a long-standing leader within multiple disability networks. Eveline is working to increase accessibility to voting for people with visual impairments in Cameroon.

Across Cameroon, people with disabilities continue to face exclusion from political life due to inaccessible voting processes, limited awareness, financial barriers, and weak institutional capacity for inclusion.

At Sightsavers Ireland, along with our partners and the support of Irish Aid, we're helping to ensure that elections are fair, inclusive, and genuinely representative, and that people like Eveline can meaningfully participate in shaping the future of their country.

What an evening! ✨

Yesterday evening we were delighted to launch Through Their Eyes, our new visual exhibition showcasing the prevention of avoidable blindness, at the The Pillar Room at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to experience the exhibition, hear the stories behind the photographs, and take part in such a thoughtful conversation about global eye health, accessibility, and the power of visual storytelling.

A special thank you to our brilliant panellists Sumrana Yasmin and Jason J Mulikita, as well as Simon Bush who couldn't be here in person but shared a wonderful video message, and to everyone who helped bring Through Their Eyes to life.

With World Sight Day this Thursday, this event was a powerful reminder that avoidable blindness is not inevitable, and that access to quality eye care can make a lasting difference for individuals, families, and communities.

This is only the beginning for Through Their Eyes. We’ll be sharing much more from the exhibition over the coming days and taking it to more audiences in the months ahead.

This Thursday is , and this week we’re shining a light on some of the eye conditions that affect millions of people around the world 👁️🌍

From cataracts and refractive error to neglected tropical diseases like trachoma and river blindness, many causes of vision impairment can be prevented or treated with access to the right care.

At Sightsavers Ireland, we work with governments and partners around the world to strengthen eye health services, prevent avoidable blindness, and ensure more people can access the treatment and support they need.

Through powerful photography, personal stories, and immersive imagery, Through Their Eyes will explore the reality of avoidable and preventable blindness around the world, and show how access to eye care, surgery, and treatment can protect and transform lives.

Join us for the exhibition launch on Tuesday, 6 October at The Pillar Room at the The Rotunda Hospital, Dublin, Dublin, featuring a panel discussion with eye health and neglected tropical disease experts Sumrana Yasmin and Simon Bush, OBE, FRGS, alongside internationally renowned photographer Jason J Mulikita, whose photography will also feature in the exhibition.

We’re delighted to see the launch of the Irish Aid Annual Report 2025 today, with a strong spotlight on disability inclusion throughout.

At a time when international development budgets are under increasing pressure globally, Ireland’s continued commitment to Official Development Assistance is something we should be proud of.

We’re especially proud that this year’s cover features Enid, a teacher in Sierra Leone whose sight was restored following cataract surgery supported by Sightsavers Ireland and Irish Aid.

Inside, the report also shares the story of Ousmanou, a disability rights advocate and participant in an Irish Aid-supported Sightsavers Ireland programme in Cameroon, highlighting the importance of people with disabilities being represented and included in political and civic life.

It’s fantastic to see disability inclusion given such prominence, and the people at the heart of this work represented throughout the report 👏

A brilliant reflection of the impact of inclusive, locally led development, and of Ireland’s continued commitment to disability inclusion.

From 15–17 September, the Hub will bring together organisations from across Ireland’s international development sector for three days of conversation, activities, and opportunities to explore some of the big global issues that connect us all 🌍

Sightsavers Ireland is delighted to be part of the Hub once again this year.
