Young people have the right to be heard 🎙️

To mark last week, young people with disabilities in the Pujehun and Kailahun districts of Sierra Leone took to the airwaves to speak about their rights, their experiences, and the importance of being included in local development.

Through radio discussions, they had the opportunity to raise awareness of the barriers young people with disabilities can face, while highlighting the vital role they can play in shaping more inclusive communities.

Creating spaces where young people with disabilities can speak for themselves and participate in the decisions that affect their lives is an important part of building a more inclusive future, where every young person has the opportunity to be seen, heard, and included ✊

In Ghana, a unique project has helped strengthen disability organisations for the long term.

Using a women-to-women mentoring model, 27 grassroots women’s rights organisations took part in training. This included advocacy, accessibility and understanding the links between gender and disability.

Veronica, Comfort and Precious are three of the project participants. They share their experiences of the training, what they learned, and how it has changed their activism.

Last week Sightsavers Ireland gathered a small group of supporters, staff, and board members to hear inspiring stories of our work, from our esteemed colleague Ezekiel Benuh, Programme Manager for our Irish Aid-supported programmes in West Africa.

An insightful session was had by all there as we heard about the impact that sight-saving surgery can have not just on individuals, but their families and whole communities.
