The oldest grave in Chapelizod is still at risk! Machine activity by a hedge cutter around this prehistoric megalithic tomb in 2023 knocked off a corner of the boulder. This megalithic tomb is a ‘protected monument’, dating to the late Neolithic (3000BC). Archaeologists uncovered the cremated remains of individuals as well as grave goods; tools, jewellery and food vessels.
Following the damage, a community meeting was held by COVA with Super Intendant Paul McDonnell of the OPW and attended by Councillor Daithí de Róiste. Conversation included how to protect the monument. Yet, last Thursday 8th October, the machine was back! No direction seems to have been given to protect the monument for the future, no direction to hand cut the hedging around the monument, no direction for the machine to maintain a safe distance from the monument, no respect by the OPW to 'protect and preserve' this vulnerable monument.
What can you do?
Although there is a park conservation plan, demand a conservation plan for this monument by emailing [email protected]!

The old Butcher’s may be available for redevelopment after decades of lying empty! DCC activity was spotted today and rumour has it they may finally start to sell some of derelict properties in Chapelizod.

Might anybody have CCTV of a man attempting to break into cars or homes along this stretch of road. He stood on this step for a period of time.
Approx 4am - Tuesday 06th October
(ie. Monday night/early Tuesday morning)
