Irish Refugee Council

Irish Refugee Council Working for a fair and inclusive society for people seeking protection. Charity Number: 20025724 Persecution isn't always born of war or conflict.

We provide services and support to refugees and people seeking asylum in Ireland. To break that down, we work with men, women and children who had to flee their home country as it is no longer safe for them to be there. The most visible example of this is people feeling war or conflict. However, we also work with people who face persecution that is often less visible or spoken about. People who ha

ve experienced torture, death threats and violence because of aspects of their identity or their actions โ€“ persecution based on their sexual identity, their religious beliefs, their political stance, for protesting, for being female, for being a ethnic minority.

Have you booked your ticket and invited your friends, family and colleagues to the screening of Home: The Zak Moradi Story as part of World Refugee Week yet?

The documentary tells the inspiring story of Zak Moradi, who arrived in Ireland as a refugee from Iraq and went on to become an inter-county hurler with Leitrim, winning the Lory Meagher Cup and earning recognition as one of the country's most prominent refugee athletes.

The screening, delivered in partnership with Lighthouse Cinema and the One Foundation, will be followed by a Q&A with Zak Moradi and Michael Darragh MacAuley, a distinguished Dublin footballer and winner of eight All-Ireland medals.

Behind every successful resettlement of a refugee is a community that shows up; standing up for what it means to be Irish; compassion, solidarity and misneach. โ˜˜๏ธ

From the Liffey to the Dodder (FL2D), a volunteer community sponsorship group, is working with our Community Sponsorship team to support a refugee family to resettle in Ireland. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช

The group needs your help to secure accommodation, cover integration costs, and provide practical and social support for up to two years. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

We recently marked the 10th anniversary of our Education Fund with an inspirational and well-attended event in Dublin. People supported shared moving stories of rebuilding their lives through education and contributing across communities in Ireland. The evening highlighted both the impact of the fund and the importance of continued access to education. ๐ŸŽ‰

Huge thanks to our panellists, facilitators and funders for making both the event and work possible! โ˜˜๏ธ

๐ŸŒŽ This Volunteer Week, we join others across Ireland in celebrating everyone who gives their time for others ๐Ÿ™Œ

Our volunteers come from many backgrounds and lived experiences, and they help us reach more people with our work every day.

We have seen volunteers consistently show up, including in areas of work that require real courage and commitment, and often where our government falls short.

๐ŸŸข Supporting people navigating the international protection process
๐ŸŸข Standing with people experiencing homelessness
๐ŸŸข Welcoming refugees into communities
๐ŸŸข Delivering and supporting English language classes
๐ŸŸข Providing practical information, peer support and companionship
๐ŸŸข Assisting with community engagement and advocacy activities

Their contribution reflects the breadth of solidarity in our communities, practical, humane, and sustained.

That is a true reflection of our values: we show up for each other and build and maintain our communities together. โ˜˜๏ธ
