Irish Refugee Council Working for a fair and inclusive society for people seeking protection. Charity Number: 20025724 Persecution isn't always born of war or conflict.

We provide services and support to refugees and people seeking asylum in Ireland. To break that down, we work with men, women and children who had to flee their home country as it is no longer safe for them to be there. The most visible example of this is people feeling war or conflict. However, we also work with people who face persecution that is often less visible or spoken about. People who have experienced torture, death threats and violence because of aspects of their identity or their actions – persecution based on their sexual identity, their religious beliefs, their political stance, for protesting, for being female, for being a ethnic minority.

Last Friday, our Information and Advocacy Service was in Westmeath, delivering consultation sessions in partnership with New Horizon. We visit locations across Westmeath twice a month, offering:

🔔 We build Ireland together. Citizenship is how we make that official.

We all want to build a secure future, put down roots and play our part in the communities around us. We want to contribute, belong and know that the place we call home is invested in us too.

That's why we're concerned about proposed changes to Ireland's citizenship laws, which risk creating new barriers for the families, colleagues, friends and neighbours who help build our communities, deserve stability and belong here.

Join us on 3 November in calling on the Government to scrap these proposals.

🫶 At the Irish Refugee Council, we are proud to be part of the North East Inner City (NEIC) community. For nine years, our office has been in this vibrant, hardworking, inclusive community, an area with high levels of urban dereliction and vacancy.

Every day, we support people who are homeless or at risk of losing their homes. Meanwhile, on our doorstep is a vacant mansion, Aldborough House, which has been empty since 1999. In 2021, it was included in the 'Top 10 Most-at-Risk' buildings nationally. There are many similar vacant buildings across Ireland.

This , we are calling on Government to bring in stricter vacancy laws, renovate empty homes and office blocks, and resource people so they can contribute to their local area.

Across Ireland, we all want the same thing: a safe home and a thriving community. Dereliction blights communities. Leaving buildings vacant and neglected for years undermines neighbourhoods and wastes opportunities to make better use of existing spaces.

👪 We all need a place to call home. A safe and affordable home provides a stable foundation to raise our families, pursue education and a career, and participate in our communities.

At the Irish Refugee Council, we constantly see the impact of government policies that push people into homelessness and poverty. Changes in rental laws, limited supports that do not match market rents. Some people are evicted from state-provided accommodation before they have found a home. Others are transferred to poorer accommodation away from their jobs, healthcare providers, schools and support networks.

This World Homelessness Day, we are calling for housing policies that support integration and help build stronger communities.

Because we all want the same things: a safe home, a strong community and the opportunity to build a better future.

Contact your TD and ask them to support policies that increase affordable housing and keep people in their communities.

Last Friday, we participated in a training session on identity, participation and inclusion.

Together, we explored identity, prejudice, power and privilege, intent vs impact, and bystander intervention. The session encouraged us to reflect on how power, privilege and unconscious bias can shape people's experiences, while also providing practical tools for responding to racism and unfair treatment.

Creating inclusive environments starts with listening, learning and reflecting on our own perspectives. We are grateful for the opportunity to deepen our understanding and strengthen our work.

🇺🇦Every young person deserves to feel safe, supported and informed as they build their future. We recently visited a home in Monaghan for unaccompanied minors who fled the war in Ukraine.

During the outreach visit, residents and staff were supported to understand recent changes to Temporary Protection and had the opportunity to ask questions.

Through our Ukraine Response programme, we help people who have fled the war in Ukraine understand their rights and entitlements in Ireland. By providing reliable information and practical support, we help people make informed decisions and navigate life in a new community.

🖌🖍Recently, some of the young people in our weekly youth group got together for an evening of drawing. The group had a great time being creative and socialising together.

Group activities like these give young people the opportunity to express themselves, and come together with their peers to create new connections and try out new things.

🔔 We all want to be able to say yes when our child needs a warm coat, wants to go on a school trip, joins a sports club, or is invited to a birthday party. For many families seeking protection in Ireland, meeting these everyday costs can be a real challenge.

Ahead of Tuesday's Budget 2027 announcement, we've been sharing our recommendations with Ministers and Government departments, calling for:
👶 Child Benefit, or an equivalent payment, for children in the international protection process.
💶 A €10 increase to the Daily Expenses Allowance.

Small changes that could make a big difference to children and families building their lives in Ireland. Because every child should have the chance to take part, belong and thrive.
