🥳It's National Volunteering Week, and we're celebrating volunteers like Omex!
Omex arrived in Cork in February of 2024 and immediately got stuck in with Cork Volunteer Centre. His favourite volunteering is event volunteering where he can help people who are celebrating together. He has volunteered at the Cork Marathon as well as the St Patrick’s Day parade several times. “I’m a people person!” he says, “I just love interacting with people.”

The Volunteer Centre became a perfect outlet for Omex to meet all sorts of people while also helping out whenever there’s a need. For him, the variety of roles available to volunteers really inspired him. “I was excited to go everywhere! Whenever they email me, ‘Are you around?’ I was just jumping on everything.” he said.

Omex is a natural leader and is always ready to lend a hand or make a suggestion. By his second St Patrick’s Day parade, he was building on his experiences and making changes to make the day the best it could be. His enthusiasm is infectious and at last year’s parade he wrote a song for the group to sing celebrating the impact of Cork Volunteer Centre!

For Omex, dealing with people is all about learning and caring for them. He said “My favourite part of volunteering is meeting new people from different countries and they tell me how they do things. I love learning things, and learning people’s outlooks on life, you know?”

🥳It's National Volunteering Week, and we're celebrating volunteers like Sunday!

Sunday volunteers in lots of places in Kilkenny like the Global Dance Club, the Men’s Shed, and festivals and events like the Cairn Community Games and the Kilkenny Arts Festival. However, his favourite volunteering role is ringing the bells at St Canice Cathedral.

“Bell ringing sounds very easy, right? But I tell you, it is not just to ring the bell, but techniques and strategy to do that,” he says, “this took me several months to ring on my own and I am still learning.”

He got involved with bell ringing through Kilkenny Volunteer Centre and he likes that the bell ringing involves working together with other people. Because each bell is rung by a different person, you have to be paying attention and connecting with the other musicians to keep pace. “It’s just like a football team” he says. You’ll often hear him behind bell 3 or bell 5.

His favourite ringing takes place on, you guessed it, Sundays before the start of the service. “Volunteering is not just volunteering, but also for self-development and meeting people,” he says.

National Volunteering Week is supported by our sponsor the Irish League of Credit Unions and our partner Healthy Ireland.
