Today, Belong To - LGBTQ+ Youth Ireland is standing in solidarity with LGBTQI+ people, activists, human rights defenders and independent civil society organisations in Turkey.
The escalating crackdown on LGBTQI+ people and civil society in Turkey must end.
At 6pm today, LGBTQI+ organisations, allies and supporters will join together outside the European Parliament Liaison Office in Dublin as part of the international day of solidarity called for by the LGBTQI+ movement in Turkey.
We have written to Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee, along with 19 other LGBTQI+ community organisations, calling on the Irish Government to use every available diplomatic channel to raise these concerns directly with the Turkish authorities and to press for concrete action.
We are calling for:
🏳️🌈 The release of those detained for legitimate human rights work and the exercise of fundamental freedoms.
🏳️🌈 Safety, dignity and humane treatment for everyone in detention.
🏳️🌈 An end to the targeting and criminalisation of LGBTQI+ people, organisations and human rights defenders.
🏳️🌈 Urgent and concrete action from the Irish Government.
🏳️🌈 Strong action from the European Union to raise these abuses with the Turkish authorities and put human rights, civic space and the protection of human rights defenders at the heart of its relationship with Turkey.
We have raised our voice with Government. Today, we raise it together.
Human rights work is not a crime.
