Dear all
I was saddened this week to hear the news that Edward (Ed) Pernot had passed. Although I did not know Ed as many others in DBC did, anything I have been told would indicate that he epitomised the caring culture that is our trademark.
I asked for some details on Ed’s time at DBC and the following was given to me.
“Ed started in Drumcondra in may 1993. He joined a large team and a full and extremely energetic house. Don Bosco, despite being in its early development, had understood that activities such as eating together, laughing, respect and celebration were the key tenets of caring for our most vulnerable citizens. That meant swimming and indoor football, long drives, camping trips, holidays in Clare, midnight swims and video nights in. When we weren't doing that , we were in Tolka Park roaring on the Shels.
Nobody ever asked Ed did he like any of the above. He just got stuck in and gave it his all. He was a great role model for younger staff in showing the importance of working with the young people on equal terms. Without exception, Ed battled in team meetings and reviews quietly but effectively for seeing the green shoots of progress in even our most challenging lads. He remained a gentle and supportive friend to all the young people that shared their lives with us throughout the years. Whilst he was never found wanting in cleaning up or other mundane tasks of the job, he was a world ' hide and seek 'champion when it came to cooking. Despite all our many years together, none of us ever knew what Dutch cuisine was like or if indeed they had one!!!
There are scores of young men, many of whom are themselves, fathers and may now indeed grandfathers who have been nurtured by Ed and been shown how a gentle, kind and committed man is one of the most powerful allies for young people in their journey. Rest in peace Ed and thanks to the Netherlands for a wonderful gift.”
To all of Ed’s family and to his many friends in DBC I want to extend my heartfelt sorrow, and that of my fellow board directors, at his passing but I am sure his spirit lives on in all the people he helped over the years.
