2026 marks 110 years since the Battle of the Somme.

Today, our cemeteries, memorials and war graves across the Somme remind us of the sheer scale of loss of the battle. It’s our ongoing mission to maintain, care for, and protect these places, so the memories, lives, and stories of those lost are never forgotten.

Read our latest blog to explore stories of those who fell on the Somme, learn more about our work caring for Somme cemeteries and memorials, and engage in Somme commemoration 110 years after the battle ended.

For the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, 100-year-old WW2 veteran Paul Terry travelled to Normandy. Paul was wearing not only his own medals, but those of his twin brother, who is no longer with us and who also served in the Netherlands during the war.

Paul joined other British veterans on Friday to honour those who helped secure freedom in Europe.
The annual pilgrimage was made possible by the Taxi Charity For Military Veterans , a charity the Veterans’ Foundation has proudly supported with grants over the years.

Yesterday, the veterans attended a beautiful service at the Pegasus Museum. Pictured below is Paul outside Café Gondrée by Pegasus Bridge.

Lest we forget 🌺

“The CWGC is honoured to have contributed to the research which has led to the identification of Lieutenant O’Neill, who made the ultimate sacrifice more than a century ago. His new headstone, crafted by our Headstone Production Unit team, will commemorate him by name at his final resting place in perpetuity. This stands as a reaffirmation of our continued commitment to the dignified commemoration of all those who fell during both World Wars.” Polly Brewster, CWGC Commemorations Case Officer.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Gilbert Clarke, whose remarkable journey took him from Montego Bay, Jamaica, to serving with the Royal Air Force during WW2.

As a radar mechanic, Gilbert played his part in wartime Britain before going on to build a life and family in London with his wife Phyllis.

Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Gilbert Clarke. 🕯️
