🚗 Does your car have keyless entry? 🔑

Many modern vehicles use keyless entry systems, which offer convenience but also rely on wireless signals between the car and the key. Like any technology, this can be misused if basic precautions aren’t taken.

There are a few straightforward steps vehicle owners can take to reduce the risk of keyless-entry theft.

Simple ways to protect your vehicle:
• Store car keys and spare keys in a signal-blocking (Faraday) pouch.
• Keep keys away from doors, windows, and letterboxes inside the home.
• Always lock your vehicle and double-check it is secure. Check telltale signs like windows closed, lights flash, wing mirrors close.
• Park in a well-lit area, ideally off-street where possible.
• Ensure your vehicle’s software is kept up to date (local dealership/service centre can help).
• Avoid leaving spare keys in or near the vehicle.

Taking a few extra precautions can help reduce opportunities for theft and protect your property.

Faraday pouches are widely available from:
• Motor accessory shops.
• Electronics retailers.
• Online retailers (search for “car key Faraday pouch” or “signal-blocking key pouch”).
• Some motor dealers and security specialists.
They are relatively inexpensive and usually sold as single pouches or packs for spare keys.

If you notice suspicious activity in your area, report it to GardaĂ.

Winter Safety & Personal Security Tip – Riverwood Residents.

On cold mornings,
frozen car windows are frustrating — but how you deal with them can also impact your personal and home security.

A simple, safer approach:
• Start the engine
• Set heating/defrost to full
• Use your spare car key to lock the vehicle while it’s running but stay close to the vehicle at all times.

This allows the car to defrost safely without pouring hot water on glass, reducing the risk of damage — and importantly, the vehicle remains locked.

Why this matters for personal & home security:
Residents are advised to keep car keys separate from house keys.
If a criminal targets your vehicle and demands keys, handing over only the car key avoids exposing your home and removes the need for costly lock changes.

Small habits like this:
• Reduce risk
• Protect homes as well as vehicles
• Support safer neighbourhoods

Community safety starts with practical, everyday decisions.
