Irish Wildlife Trust - Dublin Branch

Irish Wildlife Trust - Dublin Branch The IWT is a conservation charity committed to raising awareness of Ireland’s rich natural heritage and protecting it for future generations.

The IWT Dublin Branch was re-established in August 2010. It aims to promote awareness of Irish wildlife and environmental issues and to reunite city-dwellers with their surrounding countryside and all it has to offer. We do this through nature walks, talks, cycles, and awareness and fundraising campaigns, coupled with direct hands on conservation and habitat restoration activities throughout the y

ear. All our activities are open to the public, and participation is greatly encouraged. To find out what events are upcoming please check out the Events section of this website, or sign up for our event emailer here: http://eepurl.com/nheE1

We are always looking for new ideas / suggestions and people to get involved - we run walks and talks and conservation events on a regular basis. We also run Green Drinks on the first Tuesday of every month.

We had a very successful day at our bumblebee identification workshop in the National Botanic Gardens last Saturday as part of the IWT's Biodiversity Week events. Our own Kieran Flood led the workshop, which identified 4 or 5 different species. The bumblebees were humanely captured in order to identify them and then released without harm.

Fascinating talk last night by Darren Reidy of the National Botanic Gardens. Darren is in charge of establishing a seed bank where a representative sample of seeds of every native plant will be kept in cold storage in case they go extinct in Ireland due to climate change and loss of habitat. This isn't always easy and can involve climbing cliffs on Ben Bulben in County Sligo, or being nearly swept out to sea from remote beaches in County Donegal! They have about 20% of the seeds collected, only another 80% to go for this important initiative.
