🏳️‍🌈 Happy Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈

We are delighted to celebrate Pride Month with The Q***r Portrait Project by artist Kiz Rutherford (), featured as this month’s Café Wall Exhibition.

The Q***r Portrait Project was created in response to the erasure of the rights and history of the LGBTQIA+ community in the USA and UK and the seemingly inevitable spread of this rhetoric. This project is a snapshot of the community in Ireland in 2026; an archive of the community for the community.

Responding to hate with love and creativity, Kiz spends time in conversation with each participant whilst sketching and then returns to their studio to listen back and paint each portrait. The empty chair holds everyone who is unable to take part in the project for a wide range of reasons. The project continues throughout 2026 with the artist travelling around the country to see diverse groups, to listen to their stories and bring a community together through the common threads of experience.

Visit Mon—Fri 9:00—16:00 and Sat 10:00—15:00, on display till 29 June.

✨ Relevant, Relatable, Radical Strategy 2026—2032 is now live ✨

‘Rua Red is more than just a building; it is a living, breathing, evolving space rooted in our community, shaped by the people and this place. This Strategic Plan is a crucial step in articulating the vision and values that have guided us so far while setting out a bold and ambitious direction for the years ahead.

This document captures not only where we are now, but also where we want to go, a shared vision that reflects the diverse voices of our board, staff, artists, centre users, stakeholders, and community. It lays out a framework for deepening our connections locally, nationally, and internationally, and for continuing to grow as an organisation that is open, responsive, and ambitious.’ — Maolíosa Boyle, Executive Director Rua Red.

Rua Red has been on a two-year, strategy making journey and we are delighted to share that our Relevant, Relatable, Radical Strategy 2026—2032 is launching this Wednesday!

In May 2023 the Board and Staff of Rua Red came together—supported and guided by consultant Dr. Liz Hayes, Corporate Community—to reflect on the organisation’s evolution and explore how to build on its passion for being a place of welcome, hospitality, and inclusion: a contemporary arts centre rooted in the community of Tallaght.

Each year a roadmap will be devised that enables the organisation to take affirmative, measurable steps toward each strategic action, ensuring the strategy remains dynamic, and responsive, rather than a static plan.

Our commitment to continuous reflection and engagement will amplify the role of contemporary arts in Tallaght, developing connections locally, nationally, and internationally, while ensuring that Rua Red is a vibrant and inclusive force for creativity and community.

Relevant, Relatable, Radical Strategy 2026—2032 will be available to view in print and online from Wednesday 27 May.

Many thanks to our Board of Directors, Rua Red Staff, Key Stakeholders and , Creative Residents, Studio Artists, Individual Interviewees and Dr.Liz Hayes.

We were honoured this week to welcome President Catherine Connolly to These Beautiful Men, an exhibition of a new body of work by artist Brian Maguire commissioned by Rua Red.

Since October 2025, Maguire has been drawing men temporarily residing at an International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) Centre, a primary reception and processing centre for international protection applicants.

In a context where individuals are often reduced to statistics, Maguire's portraits consider what it means to be seen, acknowledged, and brought into representation. Each sitter is given agency and dignity.

'These Beautiful Men' features 40 of Maguires portraits in Rua Red's Gallery One, while Gallery Two holds audio recordings of the men's experiences and journeys to Ireland.

Today is the final day of our current exhibition ‘These Beautiful Men’ by Brian Maguire. Rua Red galleries are open today 10am—6pm, come see the show for one last time!

Since October 2025, Maguire has been drawing men temporarily residing at an International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) Centre, a primary reception and processing centre for international protection applicants.

Maguire and Rua Red established a temporary art studio within the IPAS centre, where artist Michael Mangan runs workshops three times a week. While Brian draws portraits of the men, participants in Mangan’s workshop are invited to paint their understanding of home and hopes for the future.

This week is your last chance to visit ‘These Beautiful Men’ by Brian Maguire. Our galleries are open 10am—6pm daily until May 9.

As Art for Human Rights notes of Maguire’s practice: “His work isn't just about aesthetics or expression - it carries a clear purpose: to confront injustice head-on and serve as a vehicle through which real human stories reach the world."
