Happy World Hearing Day!

Today we join the world in celebrating World Hearing Day. This day reminds us all that hearing health is crucially important, that access to sound and communication matters and that every person deserves to be seen and heard.

Here at Our New Ears, this day means something even more special. It’s a chance to celebrate our community, ourselves, Deaf/deaf & Hard of Hearing members of our families and friends. Users of cochlear implants, BAHAs, hearing aids and the many other types of hearing & communication technology and supporters who make this community so vibrant, resilient and inspiring. ❤️

We believe in:

*Strength in diversity - there’s no one “right” way to hear, communicate or connect.
*Voice and pride - your experiences, your language, your culture matter.
*Support and community - together we share joy, challenges, laughter and love.
*Empowerment - YOU are amazing.

World Hearing Day is about hearing care for all and about valuing every journey.

On Sunday, 4th June, thousands of women will take to the streets of Dublin to take part in the VHI Women's Mini Marathon and the wonderful women of Our New Ears ONE & Chime - National Charity for Deafness & Hearing Loss will be among them!!

It is an amazing, amazing, amazing event! It is a privilege to participate to raise much needed funds and awareness of our wonderful kids.

The National Council for Special Education (NCSE) is undertaking an evaluation of how they deliver their frontline services, such as the work of their SENOs in allocating SNAs and opening up special classes and the work of their Visiting Teachers.

They want to better understand the experiences of parents/carers whose child(ren) have been supported by the NCSE. IFF Research are carrying out a survey on behalf of the NCSE in partnership with the University of Derby and Mary Immaculate College (Limerick).

The findings from the evaluation will be used by the NCSE to inform how they can improve their services and learn more about what they do well. All responses will be treated in the strictest of confidence and go directly to the research team and not to the NCSE. The NCSE will receive a report on the overall findings which won’t identify individual responses.

Parents with younger kids are probably already fans of Bluey, a very relatable show about parenting's highs, lows and hilarious moments.
And now, they have introduced a Deaf character who uses sign language to communicate! Inclusion, everywhere, is something we will always celebrate.

Bluey just introduced a deaf character!

The already iconic family series debuted a new character named Dougie, another little pup who loves the playground. What makes Dougie distinct is the character is deaf, and is depicted as using Auslan to communicate with his mum.

The episode was broadcast on ABC Kids on this morning while a special version of the episode featuring an Auslan interpreter in the corner of the screen was made available on ABC iview.

Ludo, the production studio behind Bluey, worked with Deaf Connect to write and animate the episode, and the ABC worked with Deaf Connect on the Auslan translated version of the episode.

“The designers and animators worked with deaf Auslan users to help get the correct hand shapes and signs to make the episode as accurate as possible. Because the characters only have four fingers, this made it a little tricky for some of the signs to be completely accurate.”

The ABC has also released a one-minute companion video which teaches Bluey fans a few words in Auslan.

This weekend the Westmeath Bachelor contest takes place in Mullingar with judges Louis Walsh, Doireann Garrihy, Anne Doyle and Nathan Carter.

All at Our New Ears wish Kieran Nolan the very best of luck. A champion runner and well-known personality in the sporting world, Kieran is a role model to all our deaf and hard-of-hearing children coming after him.

We are all behind you Kieran. Knock 'em dead!
