Built around 1760 and left to ruin. Now being brought back.

The Saunderscourt Gate Lodges in Crossabeg, Co. Wexford are a rare surviving example of Palladian architecture in Ireland and we have been working to conserve them since 2001.

Work is progressing on site. Foundations have been laid. The sub-floor is in and much of what's been done is below ground level, but these are the works that make everything else possible.

Built in the early 18th century as one of three gate lodges to Castletown House - one of the most important Palladian estates in Ireland, built in the 1720s. The Round House is the oldest of the three, its distinctive circular bow front watching over the entrance to the estate for the best part of three centuries.

Inside: flagstone floors, high beds, an open fire, and six people sleeping comfortably in one of Kildare's most quietly remarkable buildings.

Celbridge is also the birthplace of Arthur Guinness. Which means that depending on how you look at it, one of the most important decisions in Irish history was made twenty minutes from where you'd be staying.

As part of European Heritage Open Days, all Irish Landmark Trust properties in Northern Ireland welcome visitors free of charge on Sunday 13th September, from 10am to 4pm.

It's a chance to step inside buildings that have been saved and given a second life, and to understand a little more about what it takes to bring them back.

Blackhead in Co. Antrim has three separate lightkeepers' houses on the same site. St. John's Point in Co. Down has the Ketch and the Sloop.

Elizabeth Fort in Cork sleeps six across two properties.

Castletown Gate Lodges and Castletown Round House in Kildare are right next to each other, looked after by the same House Manager.

We just heard the sad news that we recently lost one of our ardent Landmarkers, Vincent O'Meara. Our thoughts are with his family, especially his wife Helen. In 2023, Vincent and Helen joined in our 30th celebrations by sharing their story on our blog, covering just some of the (now almost 30) Irish Landmark properties they stayed at over the years.

Did you know we are a registered charity?

Since 1992, Irish Landmark Trust has been saving historic buildings across Ireland that were, at some point, at risk of being lost forever. Today, every one of those properties is still standing - and welcoming guests.

But there are more buildings that need saving. Projects like Saunderscourt Gate Lodges in Co. Wexford, where conservation work is underway and every donation brings us closer to opening another piece of Ireland's heritage to the world.
