Lest Clondalkin Forgets.

Tonight we remember Joseph Sheppard, Clermont, Clondalkin (aka Bolands Garage, New Rd) who lost his life 24th August 1918 - just months before the end of the Great War.

Joseph's mother died when he was just 2 years old. His half brother Francis, died aged 8 in 1902.His older brother Robert also served in the army and unknown to his family, was being held as a prisoner of war.A sad time for the entire family🥺

Many of Sheppard family are buried in St.Johns Church Graveyard, Tower Road.

In memory of Joseph and the many other Clondalkin men who never came home from the Great War we have planted rohan and fruit trees in Clondalkin WWI Memorial Garden.

This morning we were back on Monastery Rd as we continued on from last week's work on maintaining flower beds.

Thank you to our Saturday souls who showed great respect to those interred in Mount St.Joseph Cemetery which is over 200 years old.🙏🏼

Thanks to teamwork - ; elected reps and most importantly we have achieved a great deal together to conserve this very important local and national Protected Structure.

A big thank to our litter patrols for collecting so much rubbish off our streets.

Thanks everyone...you deserve it🥰

Lest Clondalkin Forgets.

Tonight we remember Thomas Brown, Leinster Regiment, who sadly lost his life on 18th August 1916.Records suggest he was born in Clondalkin and he may have been 40 years old when he was killed in action.

His Will signed in February 1915 states his wife Mary (Cooney)was living in Clondalkin at that time. However by 1916 their son John and his parents were now living in Russell Avenue,Drumcondra.

Less than 3 months after the birth of John Thomas lost his life in France during the Somme offensive.

In 1919 Mary remarried and died in 1934.

In remembering Thomas and the many Clondalkin men who never came home to their loved ones, rohan trees have been planted along with fruit trees in Clondalkin's WWI Memorial Garden

May they and their families rest in peace.🌹
