Crosscare Irish Diaspora Support Project We provide free information and advocacy to Irish citizens leaving and returning to Ireland.

Crosscare Irish Diaspora Support Project is funded by the Emigrant Support Programme of the Irish Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to provide information, advocacy and referral services to intending and returning Irish emigrants. If you are living in Ireland and you are thinking of moving abroad, or you are living abroad and you are considering returning to Ireland, take a look at our website diasporasupport.ie. Yesterday we had the the opportunity to address the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade as part of its discussions on diaspora engagement.

The Committee heard that how our team is increasingly supporting people returning in complex circumstances, including those experiencing homelessness, financial hardship, deportation, and the aftermath of fleeing conflict. These experiences underline the importance of ensuring that diaspora engagement extends beyond maintaining connections overseas and includes practical support for those who wish, or need, to return.

We spoke of the need for greater cross-government coordination when developing policies that affect returning emigrants and their families. Decisions relating to housing, social welfare and immigration can have significant consequences for Irish citizens seeking to re-establish their lives in Ireland after time abroad.

Diaspora support is at the heart of what we do.

Every year we assist hundreds of Irish citizens and their families, providing pre-departure information, connecting people leaving Ireland to supports abroad, and guiding returning Irish emigrants through their resettlement in Ireland – all with a particular focus on supporting people who are marginalised and in crisis situations.

In 2025, we provided direct support across 56 countries to 1,580 Irish citizens and their family members, working in collaboration with 107 partner organisations.
